Conference Update: Abstract Submissions, Volunteer Thanks, Polling and the 2016 Election

Stack-of-abstracts.jpg
The 2017 AAPOR Conference is already breaking records!

This year we received a record number of proposals during the submission process. The sheer volume coupled with a shortened review window set the stage for what appeared an impossible task for our volunteer reviewers. However, in true AAPOR fashion, our members turned out in record number (230 to be exact!) to offer their evaluations of the many panels, papers, methodological briefs, and poster submissions we received. We express our sincere thanks to those who participated in this invaluable task. Immediately following the review period, a small group convened in Madison, WI for two days to select abstracts, group them in cohesive sessions, and track them by topic, day, and time. This was an intense job, requiring hours of focused concentration, and sharp eyes. Thanks to Trent Buskirk for supplying us with reading and magnifying glasses, and to the entire group – Peyton Craighill, Heidi Diederich, Nora Cate Schaeffer, Mandy Sha, John Stevenson, Adam Thocher, and Vince Welch – for their enormous contributions in shaping the upcoming AAPOR program.

Moving Forward

Public opinion polling and survey research receive a lot of scrutiny during presidential election years, and this year was no exception.  In the immediate aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, it looked as though the polls had done pretty badly this year.  However as the popular vote continues to roll in, the national polls are looking better and better.  We are all looking forward to the work of the Ad‐Hoc Committee on 2016 Election Polling for a final assessment of how the polls did this time.  In the meantime, we should take this opportunity to reflect on why these polls are done in the first place.

Chapter Spotlight: PAPOR

The Pacific Chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (PAPOR) has had a great year so far. Many members were able to gather together at the AAPOR Annual Conference for AAPOR's New Member and All Chapter Welcome Reception. Those that were not were able to network and catch up on the highlights with our Mini-Conference in June. Thanks to Dean Bonner and PPIC for hosting the event.

Introducing AAPOR Profiles

AAPOR has a rich history of members from a variety of areas. We are committed to showcasing these members and their work in our fields.  I'm proud to bring you the first profile of notable AAPOR member, Peter Miller.

Peter Miller is a former AAPOR President, having served in that role in 2009 and 2010. One of his biggest accomplishments as AAPOR President was launching the Transparency Initiative, which now encompasses more than 75 survey firms. Over the years, Peter has served AAPOR in many other ways—he was AAPOR’s Standards Chair, its Conference Chair, and, for eight years, the Editor-in-Chief of its flagship journal, Public Opinion Quarterly. Currently, he serves on the Standards Committee, the Transparency Initiative Coordinating Committee and he is the co-Chair of the joint ASA/AAPOR Task Force on Improving the Climate for Surveys.

Transparency Initiative Update

Following up on some fantastic feedback, the AAPOR TICC committee made some substantial changes to the AAPOR TICC website in effort to make it easier to find key information.  Perhaps the most important change will be revising the application portal so that it resides fully on the AAPOR website thereby simplifying the application procedures. We hope to have all the revisions to the website and the new TICC application process completed over the summer.   So if your organization hasn’t joined yet or you were frustrated in the past by the application process, give us another chance.  We really would love to have almost all AAPOR organizations become TI members.
