AAPOR 72nd Annual Conference Update

10/21/2016

As I write this update, we are counting down days … 21 days until the Election, 28 days until abstracts are due for the 2017 AAPOR Conference, and 213 days until the conference itself.  Even though the conference is many days out, preparations are already underway to make this the best one ever. We look forward to telling you about the stimulating programmatic and educational content planned for the conference in upcoming newsletters. Today, I want to tell you about a few of the other exciting things we are working on:

  1. Conference kick-off session! One of our big decisions was what to do about a plenary session. From 2009-2014 the annual AAPOR conference featured an all-conference Thursday evening session in which a small, select number of guests discussed a topic of interest. In 2015 and 2016 the plenary was replaced by other activities. We asked members whether we should hold a plenary in the 2016 AAPOR Survey and 58% of those responding said “Yes.” Members also suggested ways to make the session better, starting with moving the time from its challenging after-dinner slot to daytime where it will kick-off the conference and ignite discussion on the hottest topics facing our profession. Rather than focus on a single topic, this year’s plenary offers something engaging for everyone. “Assessing the Climate for Surveys and Social Science Data Collection: A Conversation,” will feature experts from a range of disciplines addressing: 1) the changing climate for surveys and social science data collection; 2) societal and other forces shaping that climate; and 3) steps we might take to brighten the forecast.
  2. Eat some local food while getting to know new members and your Chapters! Every year AAPOR members tell us that the New Member & All-Chapter reception is one of their favorite events at the conference. This year we are hoping to increase members’ enjoyment of this event by extending the length of the reception and combining it with an opportunity to sample some delicious New Orleans inspired cuisine. Mark your calendars now for Thursday evening’s “New Member and All-Chapter Welcome Mixer and Chef Tasting Party.”
  3. Increasing AAPOR’s social media presence! The Communications Committee is a flurry of activity thinking about how best to do this. AAPOR is planning on experimenting with some live and recorded streaming of the conference via Facebook. Look for more on this in the months ahead. And speaking of social media, following much success in Austin in 2016, we are exploring ways to increase our voice on Twitter. Be ready to continue the conversation! #AAPOR

And while we continue to work on various aspects of the 2017 conference, don’t forget some important items on your “to do” list:
