2013 Member and Nonmember Conference Attendee Surveys

The 2010 AAPOR Strategic Plan calls for the regular conduct of member and non-member surveys to identify the value of membership benefits and perceptions of AAPOR’s effectiveness in delivering them. To meet these objectives, the Membership and Chapter Relations Committee (MCR) recently conducted a web survey to find out how members feel about AAPOR. We began with an advance notice sent on June 17, 2013, and signed by AAPOR President Rob Santos. Data collection commenced the following day, during which MCR sent personalized invitations to current members (N = 2,172) and non-member conference attendees (N = 152) with valid email addresses. Nonresponders received up to three email reminders. During the field period, various prompts were addressed to members via Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Data collection ended on July 25, 2013 with a final response rate of 46% for current members and 37% for non-member conference attendees.

1996 Member Survey

The 1996 Member Survey was a mail survey conducted using a modified Total Design Method approach. The mailing included the questionnaire, a cover letter from the AAPOR president, and a stamped return envelope (in the U.S only). Non-US members were given the opportunity to reply by fax. Questionnaires and reminders went to all members via postal mail; in addition, two reminders were posted on AAPORnet. With response hovering at the upper 60 percent level, a telephone reminder message brought in a request from an additional 30 members for copies of the questionnaire, resulting in a final response rate of 69 percent. AAPOR gratefully acknowledges the volunteer services of staff and students from Northwestern University Survey Laboratory (reminder telephone calls), Belden and Russonello (data entry) and the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (data analysis).
