Privacy Policy

Effective April 13, 2021

This Privacy Policy (the “Policy”) is posted by the American Association for Public Opinion Research (“we,” “us,” “our,” or “AAPOR”), and governs your use of the AAPOR website (the “Site”) as well as any other websites, applications, or products or services, including membership services, offered by AAPOR (collectively, the “Services”).

This Policy reflects our effort to maintain efficient service while respecting the privacy of those who visit the Site, correspond electronically with AAPOR, or otherwise use the Services. This Policy is incorporated into and is a part of the Terms and Conditions of Use of our Site.

The definition of the term “personal information” or “personal data” varies under applicable law. As used herein, the terms “personal information” and “personal data” refer in general to information that can identify, relate to, describe, and could reasonably be associated with a particular individual or household. This definition includes information such as your name, email address, and phone number. It can also include demographic information, IP addresses, and other unique identifiers which may be linked to you.

AAPOR is committed to keeping your e-mail address confidential. We do not sell, rent or lease to third parties the emails of members, annual meeting attendees or anyone else with whom we conduct business.

Information We Collect

In Communications with Us and Online

In connection with your use of the Site and other Services, we may collect certain personal information that you provide to us, including, but not limited to, your name, demographic information (such as your age, education, and income), employer’s name, address(es), telephone and fax number, e-mail address, and credit card information. In all such cases you will know what information we collect because you provide it to us directly.

In particular, you may choose to post certain personal information to your “profile” on the Site, such as your email address, telephone number, mailing address, descriptions of occupation, title, employer, interests, and related comments.

Please note also that if you choose to engage with us via social media, we will have access to any information available via your social media profile. Otherwise, the collection and processing of your personal information via social media is subject to the privacy policies of the applicable social media platforms. We strongly encourage you to review those policies.

Through Registration and Order Forms

In order to enroll or register in a program, attend AAPOR events, meetings, or conferences, or request Services, you may be required to fill out a registration or order form and provide personal information which we will use to process your registration or order.

In certain circumstances, a program accessed through the Site may be jointly sponsored or co-sponsored with other organizations, and registration may or may not be handled by AAPOR. Please note that AAPOR is not responsible for the privacy practices or policies of these other organizations (or their use of your personal or other information) and hereby disclaims any liability or responsibility in connection therewith.

Cookies and Log Files

The Site uses both session cookies and persistent cookies. You have the option of setting your computer to disable cookies or to alert you when cookies are being used. If you choose to disable cookies, please be aware that portions of the Site may not function properly.

How We Use and Share Your Information

As a general matter, we use your information to provide you with the Services and any other requests that you submit to us. Specifically, we may use and store such information in order to: (i) notify you of official AAPOR business; (ii) provide a Service you requested; (iii) secure your membership status; (iv) complete your online donation; (v) analyze, evaluate, and improve member and prospective member needs and interests; (vi) alert you of AAPOR news, activities, courses and programs, and other Services; and (vii) complete any other legitimate and lawful business purposes.

Personal information may be given to a third-party service provider, subject to confidentiality restrictions, in order to complete a specific business transaction on behalf of AAPOR. By way of example, and without limitation, we may share your information with (or you may provide your information directly to) third parties who assist us with event registration or with our member surveys. Contact information from inquiries received by AAPOR may be shared with AAPOR members to provide a Service, satisfy a question, or develop a prospective business relationship.

Please also note that your name and information may appear on registration or attendee lists distributed to other attendees and third parties at AAPOR events, meetings and conferences. AAPOR may also provide annual meeting sponsors and exhibitors with attendee names and postal addresses (but not email addresses). Attendees are granted access to a list of the names, institutions, and countries of other registered attendees.

Otherwise, we may disclose personal information to the proper authorities if we become subject to a subpoena or court order, or if we are otherwise legally required to disclose such information. We also may use and disclose information about you to establish or exercise our legal rights, to enforce the Terms and Conditions of Use, to assert and defend against legal claims, or if we believe such disclosure is necessary to investigate, prevent, or take other action regarding actual or suspected illegal or fraudulent activities or potential threats to the physical safety or well-being of any person. If all or part of AAPOR is merged or otherwise transferred to another entity, we may transfer the personal information you provided to us to such entity as part of that transaction.

Third-Party Links

There are links to other websites throughout the Site. Please note that AAPOR is not responsible for the privacy practices or policies of those other sites and hereby disclaims any liability or responsibility in connection with such linked sites.

Online registration and information such as credit card numbers will be secured using a commercially accepted method of encryption. However, while we employ reasonable security measures to protect your personal information, please be aware that no method of electronic transmission is completely infallible, and we cannot guarantee its absolute safety. If you become aware of any breach of Site security, please contact us immediately.

We will retain your information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which we collected it and as permissible by applicable law. To determine the appropriate retention period for information, we consider the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the information, the potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure of your information, the purposes for which we process your information and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means, and the applicable legal requirements.

Children’s Information

We do not knowingly collect or maintain personal information on the Site from persons under 13 years of age, and no part of the Site is directed to persons under 13. If you are under 13 years of age, then please do not use or access the Site or any other Services at any time or in any manner. If we learn that personal information of persons less than 13 years of age has been collected, we will take the appropriate steps to delete this information.

Do Not Track

Because there is no commonly accepted response for “Do Not Track” signals initiated by browsers, we do not presently respond to them.

Updating Personal Information and Participation

You may contact AAPOR as set forth below to update your personal information, or to opt-in to or opt-out of any Service at any time. We will provide opt-in and opt-out opportunities as applicable to the Service being offered.
