Chapter Spotlight: MAPOR

MAPOR had another fantastic and productive year! We just completed our 42nd Annual Conference
November 17 - 18, 2017. The conference featured 221 attendees (30% of which were students), a Keynote Address from Mario Callegaro of Google UK, a short course on cross-cultural surveys from Ana Villar of the City University of London, and a Pedagogy Hour with Mollyann Brodie of the Kaiser Family Foundation. The conference also included three panels, our third Respondent-Interviewer Workgroup, a new Machine Learning in Survey Sciences Workgroup, our fourth Networking Lunch, and submissions from 46 different institutions (including 4 international). The Midwest truly is a state of mind!

Taking inspiration from reality T.V. talent shows, we believe AAPOR members have the talent to tackle some of the toughest issues in survey research. Teams (or individuals) submit pitches for how to address an important survey research problem and five will be selected to present to a panel of judges in an open session at the 2018 conference.

Transparency Initiative Update and Spotlight

ReimerB-(1).jpgAll organizations involved in AAPOR’s Transparency Initiative have agreed to train their employees in TI principles and procedures for compliance. However, NORC at the University of Chicago has taken this TI requirement and made sure that not only are all employees with survey oversight responsibilities trained on TI issues but they complete their TI training on an annual basis. This spotlight focuses on Becky Reimer, a Research Scientist in The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, and the TI training program implemented by her team.

Recently, I was able to participate in the annual conference of another of our seven AAPOR chapters. This time, it was the 42nd annual conference of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research (MAPOR). Held every year in Chicago the weekend before Thanksgiving since before I entered graduate school, MAPOR’s conference is another of AAPOR’s regional jewels.
