Conference Update: Our Journey to New Heights Continues!

02/01/2018

AAPOR – the journey to take Public Opinion and Survey Research to New Heights continues as we inch closer to the 2018 AAPOR Conference in Denver! As I mentioned last month we had a record number of submissions (770 to be exact) and we have sent out acceptance notices for 636 submissions grouped into 23 Methodological Brief Sessions, 24 Panel Sessions, 51 Paper Sessions and 3 Poster Sessions. We are also going to have 12 PORTAL track sessions where you can take advantage of introductory, accessible talks for new and emerging areas in our field.

If you submitted an abstract for AAPOR you should have received an email pertaining to the status of your submission and you have until January 30th to accept the invitation to present. We had amazing submissions again this year and we did our very best to accept as many of these as we could given the space available at the conference hotel.

Some of you submitted for paper presentations but got moved to methodological brief or poster sessions and we want to encourage you to consider accepting this invitation. We are trying to use more methodological brief sessions this year (20 this year compared to 7 last year) to increase the number of presentations that can be made at the conference. You will find that we made diligent efforts to group submissions into cohesive sessions and the Methodological Brief sessions will be no exception this year.

We are also excited about AAPOR’s Got Talent! The session is giving a cash prize to winning teams and will showcase the creativity of our very own members towards solving some of the pressing issues we are all currently facing in our industry. The session is shaping up nicely thanks to the AGT team from the Education Committee.

I wanted to also alert you of two more ways you can participate in the conference.

1. We are bringing back the Video Contest – we are looking for 90-120 second videos that answers/illustrates the following question: What will the survey interview conducted in the year 2050 look like? (We are taking survey research to new heights this year and so we want to press your imaginations some 30+ years into the future). Submit your video files to this email (aapor2018@gmail.com) no later than April 7, 2018. We will select three winning videos and each submitting team will receive $300 prize.

2. We are also reimagining the Demo sessions of old and putting a new, modern spin on them. We will hold a Demo Session that will allow up to 20 participants to demonstrate a software solution to a survey/political opinion research need. Each demonstrator will be provided a separate table and a large computer monitor that can be used to demonstrate a software solution. We only have space for 20 participants so this comes on a first serve basis. There are some costs associated with this and an entry form, so please check out http://bit.ly/AAPORdemo for all the specific details. We hope you will consider taking advantage of this new and exciting opportunity at the conference – either as a demonstrator or an active spectator J

In closing I want to thank each AAPOR member who submitted abstracts to the conference. The work you all have submitted was voluminous, exceptional, interesting and exciting. I also want to thank the Conference Committee who continues to work on behalf of all of us in squaring away details of the conference. Next month we will highlight some of the “unofficial” activities offered this year in Denver, so if you are from Denver or know of some cool activity we could do “unofficially” during the conference and are interested in being its champion, could you email me at AAPOR2018@gmail.com? We’d love to hear your ideas on this!

Until next time, GO APPOR!
