The Bittersweet Process of Conference Submission Review

02/01/2016

AAPOR has historically been a very welcoming conference. While there are exceptions, AAPOR has traditionally accepted about five of every six submissions (the five year average rejection rate being 16%). This year, however, we had an all-time high number of submissions. Adding to the challenge was strong feedback from our members that sessions with six papers was not as rewarding and effective as sessions with five (methodological brief sessions excepted). Given the number of sessions with six papers has increased every year, such that last year it was the case in two of every five paper sessions (28 sessions in total), the 2016 conference had to accept even fewer papers than in the past, if the goal was to eliminate as much as possible sessions with six papers (we will have two such sessions). So we got creative. First, we followed the 2014 Saturday plan, which included an additional breakout session compared to other years. As well, we will be utilizing the largest committee meeting room for paper sessions on a limited basis. And, we will maintain the expansion of posters witnessed last year, which allowed for 50 posters per poster session.

Yet in the end, we narrowly avoided the all-time high rejection rate of 28 percent by a whopping one percent.  And that said, given the volume of submissions, we still nevertheless have the largest gross number of rejections (244)…as well as the largest gross number of acceptances (655)!  Needless to say, there were many hard decisions to make with such a high rejection rate. The Abstract Paper Selection Committee spent many hours considering reviewer’s ratings and comments, as well as personally reviewing hundreds of papers to make sure we agreed with the reviewer assessments. The result is what we consider the strongest and most high quality collection of papers and panels ever presented at an AAPOR conference. We are looking forward to it…are you?!  See you in Austin!
