Looking Forward to 2022

02/09/2022

With a return to self-management, the hiring of dedicated staff that have hit the ground running, and new office space, AAPOR’s Executive Council has eagerly embraced 2022 and is planning enthusiastically for the months ahead.

During its two-day virtual meeting in January, Council spent a significant portion of time discussing nominees for this spring’s election. Thanks to the stewardship of past president Dan Merkle, who oversaw this year’s nominations process, AAPOR will be announcing a slate of incredible candidates shortly. These individuals reflect the breadth that is AAPOR, and their appearance on the ballot is due in no small part to the many members who nominated them (or self-nominated). Voting will take place March 11– April 3, so please keep an eye out for your email ballot.

Of course, ballots are sent only to AAPOR members, so this is an excellent reminder to renew your membership if you’ve not done so already!

Business as usual in early 2022 includes ongoing conference planning. As you may have seen from our email earlier this week, AAPOR is still planning on an in-person conference in Chicago. In light of pandemic-related uncertainties, a health and safety subcommittee (an arm of the Conference Committee) continues to monitor federal, state, and local guidelines. Chaired by Mary Losch, this group also has created a health and safety hub that includes crucial information about requirements for vaccinations and boosters, testing, masks, and physical distancing. Please read Conference Chair Darby Steiger’s column in this newsletter for additional information.

As we convene for this much-anticipated conference, which already has surpassed sponsorship expectations, myriad committees are working behind the scenes. More than a dozen committees are working this month to evaluate the numerous nominations they’ve received for AAPOR’s broad swath of awards. Whether it is the Seymour Sudman Student Paper Competition or the Policy Impact Award or the AAPOR Award for Exceptionally Distinguished Achievement, we will have much to celebrate among the ranks of AAPOR.

Thanks to the work of the Education Committee, led by Emilia Peytcheva and James Wagner, AAPOR members now can sign up for an array of webinars planned for 2022. In addition, members can avail themselves of a new, more attractive pricing structure when purchasing webinar packages.

Also, on forward-facing matters but very much behind the scenes, AAPOR will be issuing this month a request for proposals for a website redesign. The goal of this redesign is not only to update the website’s look and feel, but also to facilitate its use by both members and nonmembers and become fully and seamlessly integrated with today’s technologies. We’re all excited about this redesign, which will take place roughly a decade after the last one.

From updating our standard definitions to ensuring our association remains fully relevant in a world that has become theoretically and methodologically more expansive, AAPOR volunteers contribute every day to our mission. Thank you – AAPOR couldn’t do what we do without you.
