Endless Summer

08/06/2019

This year, the luxurious feeling that arrives in June that summer is long and full of possibility was fueled by the energy from Council’s June planning meeting. The summer is being spent working out details and laying the groundwork to implement those plans. For each AAPOR committee, those efforts involve identifying committee chairs, recruiting committee members, and drafting and gaining Council’s approval for a document describing the committee’s charge.

The Code Review and Bylaws Review Committees are two regular – every five years – efforts organized by Councilors and other AAPOR volunteers on behalf of AAPOR’s members. Former AAPOR president Cliff Zukin has agreed to co-chair the Bylaws Review Committee along with Councilor-at-Large Mary Losch. Cliff and Mary have been involved in other governance efforts for AAPOR and bring that experience to these efforts as well. We expect the charge for that committee and a full set of members to be submitted to Council at the August meeting. If you’ve had bylaws on your mind anytime since the last review in 2015, please be in touch with me, Mary, or Cliff about any ideas or concerns that you have. Stephanie Eckman is leading similar efforts for the code review. The updated bylaws and code will be brought to members for a vote next year.

The call for a new editor for Survey Practice, AAPOR’s newest publication, will be released soon. Survey Practice is a model of open access publishing and a resource that is highly valued by AAPOR’s members. If you know someone fitted for that challenge, or are that person yourself, please watch for the announcement!

Councilors are busy leading other efforts, including a joint press with the American Statistical Association responding to the Supreme Court decision about including a citizenship question, which was released at the end of June. Communications Chair Josh de la Rosa and others have also begun regular meetings with Stanton Communications to build AAPOR’s ability to respond quickly to requests from the media.

There was also a brief “summer vacation” in Atlanta led by Mandy Sha, Conference Chair, and others on the conference planning team. The city of Atlanta and the conference site made a wonderful impression, and we were all excited at the prospect of returning in May 2020.

Please be in touch with ideas you’d like Council to consider – we are your Council!
