Chapter Spotlight: PAPOR

12/17/2018

PAPOR has had a busy, productive, and fun year! We just wrapped up our annual conference in San Francisco on December 6-7. It was a great event with a fantastic plenary with Scott Clement of the Washington Post and Katie Orr from KQED sharing their insights on the twists and turns of the 2018 midterms. There were two engaging short courses on sampling and reaching teens as well as conference panel sessions covering timely, important topics such as politics in the western states, voter subgroups, data quality considerations, and international public opinion research. Our annual conference also marks the transition to the new 2019 PAPOR council. We’re lucky to have many returning council members as well as a few fresh faces.

A particularly special highlight of the year was the PAPOR-organized off-site event at the AAPOR conference in Denver that celebrated the conference being in our region this year. More than 400 conference attendees came and it was a lot of fun! It’s success was due to the amazing PAPOR members who volunteered their time to organize it as well as the generous sponsorships from a variety of businesses and organizations, including sponsorships from each of the AAPOR regional chapters.

PAPOR has also continued our tradition of holding a mini-conference in San Francisco after the AAPOR conference that serves to help PAPOR members learn some of the key lessons from the national conference. Earlier in the spring we had our PAPOR Short Course, Building a Better Researcher, in Los Angeles and online that covered four topics including practical tips for happier respondents and better data, data transparency in research, improving data presentation through storytelling, and privacy in the United States and the EU.
Given PAPOR’s wide geographic reach, as president, I aimed to help foster more causal get togethers on a local level so that PAPOR members could see each other a little more often than our more formal, infrequent events. With the help of council members and other PAPOR members, this year there have been social events in the bay area, Sacramento, Portland, Los Angeles, and there will likely be upcoming events in San Diego and other locations. These mixers have the double benefit of connecting people in local areas and helping to spread the word to bring more folks into the PAPOR community.
