Chapter Spotlight: NYAAPOR
10/19/2018
NYAAPOR is honored to be featured in this issue of AAPOR. Let us tell you a little bit about our chapter.
New York AAPOR was founded in 1979 by a group of passionate AAPOR members who wanted to meet more frequently for intellectual and professional discourse than was feasible through a national organization. They wanted what AAPOR offered, but more of it.
Since that time, NYAAPOR has grown from a circle of less than a dozen people to 250 members reflecting all areas of public opinion and market research. Our membership reflects many different research communities:
- Large commercial research suppliers
- Advertising and PR agency research units
- Digital, cable, television, newspaper, magazine and online polling units
- Small entrepreneurial firms
- Government agencies
- Non-profits, and for-profit corporations
- Academia
- Technology firms
This diverse membership base allows for a thriving intellectual research community of students and professionals to debate and discuss methodological, ethical, and substantive issues related to a broad range of research topics. NYAAPOR’s overall goals are to: provide programs that inform our members about new innovations and developments in research and methods; promote best practices; offer opportunities to network and exchange views with other research professionals; educate policy makers, business leaders, the media, and the public to help them make better use of surveys and survey findings; and, advocate for the highest standards of ethical conduct.
Over the past few years, we also have focused on strengthening our chapter including: securing the financial stability of the organization, increasing the visibility of NYAAPOR in the New York/New Jersey research community, increasing our student membership base and involvement, enhancing our diversity and inclusion initiatives, providing stronger relationships among public opinion polling and market and social research, and analytic communities, improving NYAAPOR’s web site, and advancing our social media presence.
It is axiomatic that the opinion and research industry is currently transforming and will continue to face significant challenges impacting the research process as well as the new skills necessary for success. Since 2016, NYAAPOR has focused many of their evening sessions and workshops on keeping our membership, friends and colleagues “research forward”, by providing the tools and methods to master technological and digital advances and political challenges.
Past presentations included: “Data Visualization: Using Data To Tell Compelling Stories” , “Building Your Social Brand”, “Are you Afraid of Big Data”, “The Future of Traditional Telephone Interviewing”
and, a “Text Analytics and Machine Learning” workshop.
The 2018-2019 kicked off the season with a networking event, followed by a very inspiring presentation on “What’s Blockchain and what does it have to do with Survey Research”? The rest of NYAAPOR’s Fall 2018 lineup is:
