Chapter Spotlight: DC-AAPOR

08/16/2021

Like national AAPOR, DC-AAPOR has shifted most of its content to virtual events throughout the pandemic. As local conditions continue to improve, we are looking forward to resuming in-person activities in the coming months. We hope to host our annual holiday party in person this year!

Here are some highlights from events DC-AAPOR has hosted thus far in 2021:

DC-AAPOR kicked off 2021 with Research and the Black Community, a virtual Zoom panel presented by DC-AAPOR’s Diversity Working Group. Camille Lloyd (Gallup Center on Black Voices) led the discussion on how research industry practices impact the Black community, focusing specifically on gaps in representation, mistrust in research studies, and how to amplify Black voices in research. She was joined in the panel discussion by Karla Slocum (Institute of African American Research, UNC Chapel Hill), Cary Funk (Pew Research Center), and Candace Hokett (CHH Consulting LLC). If you missed the virtual event, you can watch the discussion on our YouTube channel.

In April, DC-AAPOR and the Washington Statistical Society (WSS) cohosted a statistical seminar event: Developing and Testing an Online Diary Survey: Memorial Seminar for Jennifer Edgar. Jennifer was the posthumous recipient of our 2020 DC-AAPOR Outstanding Achievement Award, which was presented to her family during the event. Adam Safir and Laura Erhard, both from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), presented on the Consumer Expenditure Surveys Redesign, or the Gemini Project. Jennifer was actively involved with the project during her time at BLS, helping launch the effort to research and develop a redesign for the survey, addressing issues of measurement error and respondent burden, and outlining the future direction of the project. During the event, colleagues and members of the DC-AAPOR and WSS communities shared memories and anecdotes honoring Dr. Edgar. She continues to be missed as a member of both communities.

DC-AAPOR was actively involved in the national AAPOR virtual conference in May, participating in the All-Chapter Virtual Mixer and the Ask Your Chapters Anything! coffee break. The sessions were a great chance to connect with chapter members from around the country.

DC-AAPOR also held its annual executive council elections in May. We would like to send a warm welcome to the 2021/2022 DC-AAPOR Council members: Patti Goerman, President (U.S. Census Bureau); Martha McRoy, Program Chair (Pew Research Center); Jonathan Katz, Secretary/Membership Chair (U.S. Census Bureau); and Elizabeth Petraglia, Treasurer (Westat). Thanks to all our members who participated in the elections!

On June 29th, DC-AAPOR hosted the Public Opinion Quarterly (POQ) Special Issue Webinar: Political Communication and Public Opinion. The panel event featured authors from the 2020 Special Issue of POQ, “Political Communication and Public Opinion: Innovative Research for the Digital Age.” Authors discussed their work from the special issue and focused on the research that they have pursued since the publication. Speakers included Michael Beam (Kent State University), David Silva (Kent State University), Spyros Kosmidis (University of Oxford), Shannon C. McGregor (University of North Carolina), Kjerstin Thorson (Michigan State University), and Benjamin Toff (University of Minnesota).

DC-AAPOR is always eager to hear from our members and other chapters about possible collaboration or ideas for future events. We are also committed to diversifying our membership and the Executive Council. If you have any ideas about either effort, or would like more information about DC-AAPOR, please do not hesitate to contact us at dcaapor@gmail.com.
