AAPOR Profile: Mark Hugo Lopez

10/14/2019

Lopez.jpgMark Hugo Lopez is the director of global migration and demography research at Pew Research Center and a leading expert in the field of Latino demographic research and in Latino survey research. Mark’s work at Pew Research involves leading the planning of their research agenda on international demographic trends, international migration, US immigration trends, and the US Latino community. He previously oversaw Pew’s Hispanic trends research group.

An AAPOR member since 2008, Mark remembers his first conference as an exciting mix of professionals and academics with practitioners of survey research; a place to combine his interest in economics, public policy, and opinion polling.

In 2019, the Pew Research Center’s National Survey of Latinos won AAPOR’s Inclusive Voices Award, honoring Mark and his colleagues for work producing data to “improve the ability to study complex social phenomena related to understudied and underserved, and therefore under-voiced populations.”
Before Pew Research, Mark was a research assistant professor at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy and the research director at the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE).

Mark considers heading the Hispanic research center at Pew Research to be one of his greatest achievements, allowing him to travel, learn, and talk about the community he is so passionate about. Next year, he’s off to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to see the cities of the old silk road, pursuing his passion for travel.
Gunther, Mark’s Maine Coon cat, was a well-known personality in his classroom and on the internet. In front of the camera, the large orange cat would sit on the photo of the 2008 presidential candidate who he thought would emerge victorious in upcoming state caucuses and primaries. And according to Mark, he was right 61% of the time!
