AAPOR Chapters are the Source of our Future Leaders

10/16/2017

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend the 36th annual meeting of the Southern Association for Public Opinion Research (SAPOR). Having been a loyal MAPOR member for most of my career, I have to confess that I have seldom stepped out to participate in the activities of other AAPOR chapters (with the exception of one visit to DCAAPOR as part of one of their annual sessions to highlight the contents of a POQ special issue a few years back).

The recent SAPOR meeting gave me a chance to hear some great presentations, reconnect with some old friends, and to make several new ones. It was also a chance to reflect on the strengths and wonderful diversity of AAPOR’s seven regional chapters. They each represent a different mix of our for-profit, not-for-profit, government, communications and academic sectors. The types of annual activities sponsored by each chapter also vary considerably. The structure and formats of the annual conferences that some chapters host are also different, as are their unique histories. Something our chapters all have in common, though, are committed, engaged leadership teams. This was my take-away from the SAPOR meeting: AAPOR is strong because the leadership of our chapters is strong. Indeed, AAPOR looks to its chapters for future leadership. In any given year, AAPOR’s Executive Council includes numerous members with records of service to their local chapters. Clearly, our chapters play an important part in maintaining a strong and effective AAPOR. Thank you, chapters.
