AAPOR Profile: Margaret Roller

If you’ve been following along on AAPORnet, Margaret Roller should be a familiar name. Champion of qualitative methods, she and Paul Lavrakas literally wrote the book on Applied Qualitative Research Design before starting the qualitative-focused affinity group within AAPOR, QUALPOR. A long-time member of AAPOR, Margaret’s company, Roller Research, is starting its fifth decade this year, and she also shares her knowledge on her blog, Research Design Review. I interviewed Margaret in December to discuss her career and expertise and why qualitative work is so important in our field.

AAPOR Profile: Tamara Terry

Grab your chisels—we are making a change! Or at least that is Tamara Terry’s method for getting through obstacles, and she is passionate about inclusion and equity. Not in an abstract way, but in a putting-in-the-effort, leading-the-charge, and building-teams-to-make-things-happen kind of way.

Abstract Submissions are Open for the 2021 AAPOR Annual Conference!

It’s fall! Leaves are turning from green to red, orange, yellow and brown; pumpkin spice-flavored drinks and food are everywhere; and AAPOR is now accepting abstracts for the 2021 AAPOR Annual Conference. We are seeking abstracts for a variety of submission types—our traditional papers, methodological briefs, posters, and panels—and we have introduced two new session types: professional development and career advice sessions and round tables. Abstract submissions are open through Friday, November 13, 2020, at 11:59 PM.

Thanks to the volunteers who served on the Webinar and Short Course Subcommittees this past year, AAPOR members were able to enjoy some great learning opportunities.  If you have an idea for a webinar or short course topic you’d like to see offered, please reach out to Doug Currivan (Webinar Subcommittee Chair) or Brady West (Short Course Subcommittee Chair) with your suggestions. If you’re interested in submitting a proposal to be a presenter, the online submission forms will be available later this summer.

Chapter Spotlight: MAPOR

MAPOR has been busy so far during 2020 with a number of different activities. We are building up to our 45th annual conference November 20 and 21, which will be virtual this year instead of at the Embassy Suites as usual. One advantage of being virtual will be to accommodate folks who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend due to travel, expense, or scheduling conflicts. Our Conference Chair, Sara Walsh, and the rest of the MAPOR Conference Committee have been hard at work assembling a very exciting and high-quality program following our theme, “Why Representation Matters.”

Chapter Spotlight: SAPOR

During 2020, we chose to continue with the theme of #SAPORSpeaks across all events and communications. To this end, we started the year with several goals. First, increasing student membership and engagement. Second, continuing to engage our current membership through networking and social events. Third, revamping the SAPOR website. We continue to strive to make progress on our goals despite the complications brought about by COVID-19, including hosting two virtual happy hours for our members on Zoom and helping coordinate the AAPOR All-Chapter Social Event during the Virtual AAPOR Conference. Anything we are unable to fully accomplish this year will likely carry forward into future goals to make our organization even stronger.
