Visualizing the 2017 Conference Program

11/18/2022

People often say “a picture paints a thousand words.” In the case of this word cloud, generated using the titles of abstracts accepted for presentation at the 2017 conference, the words paint a picture; one that echoes the conference theme and visualizes the range and diversity of topics to be discussed in May.

As reported in December’s newsletter, we received a record number of submissions in response to our call for papers. Unfortunately, this massive response put us in the undesirable position of having a record-setting rejection rate and turning away many excellent and essential presentations. We are addressing this in several ways. First, using the schedule adopted for the highly successful 2014 conference in Anaheim, CA, a total of twelve concurrent sessions will run from early Thursday afternoon to late Sunday morning. Second, taking advantage of the generous and luxurious space offered by the Sheraton New Orleans, we are adding a tenth breakout session to each of the concurrent sessions. Although the addition of a tenth session inevitably makes it more challenging to select which session to attend, the program will include themed tracks to help winnow your choices, including: Attitudes & Issues;  Data Collection & Sampling; Data Quality; Innovations & Emerging Methods; Measurement: Populations & Topics; Questionnaires & Interviewing; Multi-cultural, Multi-national, & Multi-lingual; Online/Probability/Nonprobability; Politics & Elections, and Survey Participation. And finally, in terms of content and quality we are poised to have the biggest and best poster sessions ever with three sessions supporting 60 posters per session. Be on the lookout for the preliminary program which will be available online soon.

In addition to unparalleled substantive content, the 2017 conference will offer other ways for attendees to learn and grow. Mira Norton, chair of the Professional Development Committee writes that it’s time to get excited, get challenged and grow personally and professionally at the AAPOR conference this year!

The Professional Development Committee is thrilled to bring Todd Corley of the TAPO Institute (http://www.tapoinstitute.org/) to give a workshop on unconscious bias. Todd brings a wealth of experience in diversity consulting, including his work at Abercrombie & Fitch, where the Huffington Post called him, “the man who made Abercrombie & Fitch less white, male.” In the workshop, Todd will examine where unconscious bias meets inclusive leadership. Group participants will walk away with concrete steps on how to build, implement, and strengthen diversity and inclusion principles within themselves and their organizations.
