New Initiative Seeks to Build and Strengthen AAPOR Membership

11/18/2022

AAPOR is piloting a new initiative that seeks to recruit student-faculty “pairs” interested in becoming our AAPOR colleagues. The initiative provides Diversity Pipeline Awards that target members of historically underrepresented racial-ethnic groups interested in the study of public opinion, survey research methodology, and/or statistics. The award provides waived conference registrations and annual membership fees for both the student and faculty, and one $800 cash awarded to the pair to support travel expenses.

The pilot programs results from discussions with past Student Travel Awardees and AAPOR members about the experiences of 1st time conference attendees. We learned that for many, especially racial-ethnic minorities, the conference can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate both socially and academically. As a result, the program targets groups of two: student-faculty pairs.

Interested students should apply for the award with the support of a faculty member interested in attending the conference. At a minimum, the student or the faculty member should identify as belonging to the targeted population.  Preference will go to individuals with no AAPOR membership experience. There is no requirement that the faculty member and student come from the same institution.

Students must be enrolled full-time students (including Post-Doctoral students) in college or university programs. In addition, both the student and faculty must have an expressed interest in, teach or use, survey and/or public opinion research methods. Additional application details are located on the AAPOR website.

The initiative is supported by AAPOR’s Executive Council, Diversity Coordinating Committee (DCC), and the Membership and Chapter Relations Committee. Mostly importantly, the initiative supports specific goals tied to “upholding our shared common values and member diversity across multiple dimensions” documented in the AAPOR2025 strategic plan.

AAPOR believes that the scholarly and practical understanding of our discipline is enhanced by the presence and involvement of different perspectives and creative thought. Such diversity and inclusion leads to consequential research, improved interdisciplinary collaboration, and a greater ability to address, understand, and solve problems related to public opinion and survey research methodology.

The award application form must be completed online, and the deadline is January 11, 2019. Any questions can be sent to the respective support persons for the Student Travel Award Committee, the DCC Dianne Rucinski, or Executive Council (David Wilson).

Awardees will be notified by the Membership and Chapter Relations Committee by the end of February.
