Q&A:
Why do you encourage students and early career folks to join AAPOR?
When I was a student, professional organizations seemed like something you did when you grew up, but after coming to the US and joining AAPOR, I realized that the connections they provide are tremendously helpful in launching a career. AAPOR is particularly unique given that its members are from academia, government as well as the private sector, which provides you with exposure to a lot of different research sectors and career possibilities.

What do you see as the benefits of being a member (specifically for students and early career folks)?
Building your own network is probably the biggest benefit. It’s nice to see what people are talking about on AAPOR.net, in Public Opinion Quarterly, and the other resources you get free access to. These resources alone hold a great deal of value, but attending the events that local chapters offer, is perfect for young professionals. These events are small enough to not be intimidating, you meet the same people repeatedly, and eventually before you know it, you’re one of them.

Our “Chapter Spotlight” this month features the Pennsylvania/New Jersey chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (PANJAAPOR) . Check out their article to read about their chapter’s events and news.  Are you a member of your local chapter? If not, learn more about the chapters here!
