Conference Update and Shout Out to Volunteers

11/18/2022

We are just eight weeks until the opening of registration for the 2016 AAPOR Annual Conference!  My experience as Conference Chair has really taught me a lot about what it takes to pull off a great event like the AAPOR Conference, which is to say, it takes a lot of people! Yes, Jen Dykema and I have been, how do I put it? BUSY. Our AAPOR staff and Conference Support Committee are keys to the success of the conference. But so, so many more folks have put their heart and soul into preparing for the conference, for at least a short time, when called upon to help, and yet do not get as publically recognized as others. For example, the Conference Abstract Selection Committee dedicates two and a half days in December to, simply put, make a conference…papers, posters, sessions, etc, the magic happens at this crucial meeting.  To say these folks “hammered it out” is an understatement, and I am so grateful they were so willing to put the pedal to the metal for 60 hours straight (OK, so we did eat and sleep too, but that was about it!): Nina Hoe, Krista Jenkins, Mandy Sha, Tim Triplett, Peyton Craighill and Jen Dykema, thank you!!

And then there are the reviewers. As is typical, we had over 180 AAPOR members judge papers, panels, methodological briefs and posters. These folks in one respect have more “say” in what gets into the conference than anyone else. They are our quality control. Being a bit of a data geek, this year I conducted an analysis of reviews, in order to assess inter-reviewer reliability and in order to have confidence that the Abstract Selection Committee could trust the work done by reviewers. In short, what I found is that reviewers are amazingly consistent in their ratings of abstracts, which again I think attests to the seriousness and high level of consideration they put into their efforts. So reviewers, thank you!

Looking forward to a great conference,

David
