2016 Conference Update

11/18/2022

Did you know that over 100 people move to Austin every day? Yup, that is the current best estimate (of course demographers don’t all fully agree with this assessment…who would think that survey researchers could ever disagree with one another??!). And every week brings us closer to visiting this dynamic, colorful, and growing city in the Lone Star State.

But what excites me is not the conference location (which is excellent), it is that I truly believe this will be a conference like no other, in terms of the depth and breadth of what we will discuss, present, and learn from one another. One colleague said to me recently that our field is in a period of “disruptive innovation.” Now, this is not to say that we are replacing old ways with the new. But rather that we are rapidly developing new methodologies while we revise and strengthen existing ones. Exciting new methods and modelling are happening simultaneously with major advances around the tried and true methods of our field. I see this dual-perspective clearly in the panel submissions we have received. On balance they are, in a word, impressive, covering both developments in big data, social media, and non-probabilistic methods AND deep innovation in telephone research and in large-scale data collection projects that have run 50 years or more.

Every year, the AAPOR Conference moves the field toward greater understanding, appreciation, and sophistication with its craft. The 2016 AAPOR Conference, I am confident, will push the needle more than any conference in recent history. Join the fun! Be part of the movement to Austin (if only for a few days)!
