Special Sessions

AAPOR 2026’s special sessions bring the work of our volunteer leaders to the forefront—creating space for timely, field-shaping conversations that extend beyond traditional research presentations.

From advancing inclusion and equity to navigating the rapid integration of AI, tackling survey cost challenges, and reflecting on the history that informs our future, these sessions highlight the issues that matter most right now. They are designed to be interactive, thought-provoking, and grounded in real-world practice, offering attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the people driving this work forward.

These conversations don’t just reflect where the profession is; they help define where it’s going. Mark your calendar and be part of the dialogue shaping the future of public opinion research.

AAPOR – WAPOR Global Research Panel
Rethinking Global Citizenship and Research: A Collaborative Approach
Wednesday, May 13 | 10:45 am – 12:15 pm

Global and multinational identities are increasingly defining the 21st century, yet public opinion research remains largely confined within national boundaries. As a result, transnational populations and those living between systems of belonging are often underrepresented or rendered invisible.

This collaborative panel inaugurates a joint approach that examines the methodological, measurement, and data quality challenges that arise when researching global and multinational identities, alongside the substantive questions they raise about how identity is perceived, constructed, and measured.

Every Voice Matters: An Inclusion and Equity Open Forum
Wednesday, May 13 | 3:15 – 4:15 pm

Join the AAPOR Inclusion and Equity Committee (IEC) for an open, interactive forum focused on building a more inclusive, equitable, and welcoming professional community. IEC Chairs and subcommittee leaders will share highlights from this year’s work.

Equally important, this session creates space for dialogue about the future of inclusion and equity at AAPOR. Attendees are invited to share perspectives, ask questions, and offer ideas that can help guide our collective efforts. Whether you are deeply engaged with IEC initiatives or simply interested in learning more, all members of the AAPOR community are welcome. Together, we will explore how equity and inclusion can continue to strengthen our field.

AI Task Force Sessions

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming survey research, influencing every stage of the workflow, from questionnaire design to administration to analysis to briefing. These innovations create the potential for efficiency and scalability but also introduce profound methodological, ethical, and quality-related challenges.

To address these issues, AAPOR convened a Task Force on Responsible AI Integration in Survey Research, whose report will be released concurrently with the conference and whose members will be addressing their findings to the community in two panels:

  • Responsible AI Integration in Survey Research: Discussion 1 of 2 by the AAPOR AI Task Force
    Thursday, May 14 | 9:30 – 11:00 AM
  • Transparency and Disclosure in AI-Enabled Survey Research: Discussion 2 of 2 by the AAPOR AI Taskforce and Journal Editors
    Thursday, May 14 | 11:15 am – 12:45 pm
Survey Costs: An Update from the Recent Workshop
Sponsored by the Survey Costs Workshop
Thursday, May 14 | 9:30 – 11:00 am

Survey costs are one of the most important factors driving design decisions and affecting survey errors in sample surveys. Information about the range of cost metrics (e.g., currency, non-currency, relative costs) across the range of survey design features is sparse and underexplored. In conference presentations and journal publications, when cost calculations are provided, the definitions of what is included are often unclear, making comparisons across studies and organizations difficult.

A recent workshop started a conversation on survey costs. This session will bring elements of the workshop directly to the AAPOR conference.

From 1930s Hollywood to CASM to the Great Wealth Transfer: A Public Opinion Research Story of Data, Innovation, and the Quest for Truth
Friday, May 15 |  4:00 – 5:30 pm PT

On Friday, May 15, at 4:00 pm, the AAPOR History Subcommittee and Cross-Cultural & Multilingual Research Affinity Group are hosting a special event at the conference. Tom Smith, Mandy Sha, and Cassandra Burton will present, respectively, a historical narrative about public opinion research in the 1930s Hollywood, the enduring lessons from the Cognitive Aspects of Survey Methodology (CASM) over time, and then back to the future on current research that informs next two decades’ Great Wealth Transfer. Jason Kosakow will highlight AAPOR History Project initiatives that preserve our collective history. AAPOR’s Associate Education Committee Chair Camille Burge to moderate.
