Statement on Advancing AAPOR’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives
Sadly, we continue to see hate crimes and violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) that have led to deaths and increased uncertainty, suffering, and fear for individuals, their families, and communities across our country. AAPOR strongly condemns racism, sexism, harassment, hate crimes, injustices, and any other form of discrimination, mistreatment, or inequality.
Documenting these tragedies and finding ways to reduce hate and its consequences – indeed, understanding public opinion – are the job of researchers like those in our ranks. The need for high-quality data and research has never been greater. The range of areas in which research is needed continues to grow, fueled by the pandemic and by violence toward marginalized and vulnerable individuals.
AAPOR’s Inclusion and Equity Committee (IEC) was established by this year’s Executive Council to create, implement, and maintain programs that promote the inclusion of diverse AAPOR members and ensure that members of marginalized groups receive equitable opportunities, recognition, and support within the organization. The IEC will work to infuse inclusion and equity strategies into all facets of AAPOR’s organization and practices including:
- Culture and communication
- Outreach, with a focus on talent-pipeline planning and membership diversification
- Learning and professional development
- Affinity groups
- Nominations and awards
- Metrics and accountability
We are eager for AAPOR, led by the IEC, to develop and implement the intentional strategies that will help strengthen our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
