AAPOR Statement Regarding 2020 Census

04/02/2018

The American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) has noted the administration’s recent announcement that it plans to add a new, untested citizenship question to the 2020 Census form. We strongly urge the Department of Commerce to reconsider this decision, as it represents a methodologically unsound and apparently political decision.

A non-partisan Census is essential to a well-functioning society. The United States uses the decennial census in myriad ways. Accurate census data guides more than $675 billion dollars of federal funding to states and communities and safeguards fair political representation.

We further urge all residents of the United States to cooperate with and respond to the 2020 Census in the spirit both of good citizenship and the public good. We all benefit from an accurate, non-partisan Census of our nation.
