AAPOR Statement on the Trump. v. Selzer, Selzer & Company, Des Moines Register & Tribune Company & Gannett Co. Lawsuit

12/17/2024

As a non-partisan organization, the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) is dedicated to championing the value of sound public opinion research. We aim to ensure the significance of this work is widely understood.

AAPOR is closely watching the developments of this lawsuit. We reaffirm our mission to uphold the credibility and integrity of public opinion research as an essential component of democratic processes and First Amendment rights.

Public opinion polls are foundational tools for understanding societal sentiments. They represent snapshots of public opinion at specific points in time, which can vary due to factors such as timing, sampling methods, and shifts in public sentiment. Uncertainty is an inherent part of this process. It’s important that polls that are designed to be publicly released are made available, along with sufficient methodological information to allow evaluation, so we can understand the full weight of the scientific evidence.

Election polls aim to provide insights into public thinking and potential behavior, not definitive election forecasts. Differences between polling results and election outcomes can and often do occur for reasons unrelated to misconduct or fraud. Such variations highlight the complexity of capturing public opinion and the importance of interpreting polls within their limitations.

At AAPOR, we are committed to transparency and the advocacy of high standards and best practices in public opinion research, and in light of this commitment, we are actively following this lawsuit and will continue to update this statement as issues unfold in the months ahead.
