AAPOR Statement on Access to Federal Data

02/04/2025

The American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) expresses grave concern about the recent removal of federal statistical data and documentation from publicly available websites and portals. Public access to these datasets is essential for scientific research, informed policy decisions, the public good, and is fundamental to America’s economic competitiveness and market efficiency.

The data and supporting documentation provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other agencies are developed by funding from taxpayers and serve as vital resources for researchers, policymakers, businesses and investors, as well as the general public.

AAPOR is committed to upholding the highest standards of scientific integrity which include transparency in research, responsible accessibility, and open engagement with data users. The removal of federal datasets undermines these principles and erodes public trust.

AAPOR strongly urges that when data review processes are necessary, they be conducted transparently. This includes timely public notification, clear criteria for review and revision, and a defined timeline for completion. Data access must be restored as quickly as possible, and any changes to datasets or documentation be clearly cited.

We call on policymakers, researchers, and federal agencies to prioritize the restoration and long-term accessibility of public datasets. Establishing a transparent and structured approach to any review is critical to maintaining public trust, advancing scientific research, and ensuring that data-driven decision-making remains robust and credible.
