The Black Diaspora Story You’ve Been Missing – Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

The book that I would put in your hands is Homegoing by Ghanaian-American Yaa Gyasi. The book begins with two sisters, growing up in Ghana in Colonial times — one lives her life in Ghana while the other is sent into slavery in the United States. When I put this book in your hands, I put you in the hands of a skilled storyteller, so you walk alongside seven generations descended from both sisters. Through every major point of the Black Diaspora, their parallel yet distinctively different lives unfold in Ghana and the United States.

Yes, this book has a big sweep but also a page-turning pace. Even if you think you know the history, “how this will end,” you’ll encounter eye-opening scenes. There were some paragraphs I had to read three times, “Wait? That really happened?” If you want to market to Black people, know our history, what really happened. Learn more deeply the whys behind sensitive topics, complaints, distrust. I recommended this book as a mini book club for two agency presidents – who were not people of color. Their feedback as “I knew but I didn’t know.”

As a multicultural researcher, I researched the author. I watched her YouTube videos. What Gyasi was doing was in-home ethnography. Plus, she didn’t come into the Ghanaian homes as the Stanford grad, the Iowa Writer’s Workshop Dean’s Graduate Research Fellow from the United States. She came with the energy of a humble, open mind. She left her ego at the door. That’s what we need to do as researchers. We must do this to be able to immerse ourselves to get the quality data that we need.

Another multicultural marketing lesson from this book? Having all these characters’ voices in a story is like a series of focus groups (imagine if we could do focus group across time!) Each character has a unique voice showing us his or her experiences that come together as bigger truths. The big truths of the Black experience. Big truths about the immigrant experience. An experience that’s still unfolding.

At Ebony Marketing Systems, we specifically recruit to capture that ongoing experience today. Were you born in the U.S.? This is still an important, highly relevant question. Take a closer look at your research and marketing practices – do you only think about immigration recency when you’re marketing to AAPI or Hispanic markets? This is a critical consideration with the Black market as well. A Black Latino is different from a U.S. born Black who is different from a Black Caribbean, or a Black born in Africa. A recent faith and spirituality project dramatized that for me with disparate views on faith across these different groups. Waaaaay different mindsets. You need to bring that “where are you seated in culture” mentality to Black multicultural marketing.

There is a poignant reminder of “where are you seated” in Homegoing. The character of Yaw Agyekum, teaching high school history in 1980s Ghana, asks his eager students a question central to multicultural marketing and especially in qualitative research:
“…you must always ask yourself, Whose story am I missing? Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice (the voice that has the power) could come forth? Once you have that figured out, you must find that story, too. From there, you begin to get a clearer, yet still imperfect, picture.”
