Jordon Peugh, AAPOR President 2025-2026

From the President’s Desk

Dear Fellow AAPOR Members,

As we settle into fall, I’m feeling tremendous optimism about where AAPOR is headed and gratitude for the energy and engagement of this community. We’re thrilled to welcome Betty Whitaker as our new Executive Director. With over 30 years of association leadership, Betty brings strategic insight and a strong focus on member engagement-she’s already making a meaningful impact.

This season also marks the launch of our membership drive, a great time to renew and invite others to join. Plus, we’re spotlighting the Standards Committee’s latest resources, including new guidance on ethical data practices and a powerful Online Response Rate Calculator.

Looking ahead, the Call for Papers is open for AAPOR’s 81st Annual Conference in LA, promising bold ideas and deep collaboration. Read the full letter to see how AAPOR is growing, innovating, and supporting our field through both exciting opportunities and ongoing challenges. Read the full message here

Standards Updates
Code Revision

AAPOR’s Standards Committee is revising the AAPOR Code this year and welcomes member input. Our bylaws require us to keep the Code of Professional Ethics up-to-date as the industry changes, and we are interested in your thoughts. While we can’t guarantee your suggestions will appear in the final draft, all thoughtful and reasonable edits will help guide our work.

Have ideas? Email ad hoc Code Review Subcommittee chair Ned English or Associate Standards Chair Krista Jenkins to share your suggestions and help shape the future of AAPOR’s standards. Please send your feedback by the end of October. Membership will review and vote on the final proposed version next spring.

New Guidance and Tools

The AAPOR Standards Committee is pleased to share several new guidance documents and tools designed to help researchers navigate evolving methodological, operational, and ethical challenges in public opinion research. Each reflects our commitment to promoting high standards and transparency in the field. Many of these reports reflect several years of work, and we are grateful to past Standards chairs and members who advanced these efforts.

Ethical Issues in Linking Non-Survey Data to Survey Data

This document explores ethical considerations when linking survey data with administrative, commercial, or other non-survey data. It highlights the importance of protecting respondent privacy, maintaining informed consent, and ensuring data security. The guidance offers practical frameworks to help researchers make transparent, defensible decisions about data linkage while upholding AAPOR’s ethical principles. Thank you to Josiane Bechara, Trent D. Buskirk, A. Rupa Datta, Ned English and an additional colleague for their work on this report.

Texting for Research: A Brief Guide to the Regulatory Environment and Operational Considerations

This new guide represents the culmination of extensive work by an AAPOR ad hoc subcommittee formed to examine the challenges researchers face when using text messaging for data collection. The group engaged directly with key industry stakeholders, including the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA)-and submitted formal comments to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on behalf of AAPOR to advocate for research-friendly policies.

Drawing on those conversations and their collective expertise, the subcommittee developed this guide to help researchers better understand the regulatory environment, navigate carrier restrictions, and apply best practices when using text messaging as a survey tool.

We extend our gratitude to the members of the subcommittee for their leadership and collaboration: Neha Sahgal (Chair), Jennifer Benz, Kevin Collins, James Dayton, Ned English, Kate Hobson, Jennifer Hunter-Childs, Cameron McPhee, Brenna Muldavin, Angelique Uglow, and Andy Weiss.

Estimating the Eligibility Status of Cases with Unknown Eligibility

This new report complements the MPOR Standard Definitions (10th Edition) by providing updated guidance on how to estimate “e,” the proportion of cases with unknown eligibility that are likely to be eligible. It explains the most common calculation methods and offers advice on when each approach is appropriate. Building on earlier work (Smith, 2009), the report expands its scope to reflect today’s more complex survey designs-such as multimode, multi-phase, and multi-frame studies-and aligns with the latest updates to AAPOR’s Standard Definitions. Ashley Amaya led the revision, with contributions from Jenny Marlar and Ned English.

Online Response Rate Calculator

We are very excited to announce the launch of the online response rate calculator. The online calculator is an interactive tool that will ask a series of questions and use your responses to calculate response rates. Our hope is that this tool is more user friendly than the excel calculator and that it will be used by researchers and practitioners outside of MPOR. Please share with your colleagues and research partners. While the calculator has been tested for accuracy, it is an early version and future improvements may be made. If you encounter any errors or have suggestions for improvement, please contact standards@aapor.org. Ashley Amaya, Mickey Jackson and Jenny Marlar led the efforts to develop the calculator.
