From the President’s Desk

11/26/2024

My fellow AAPOR members,

As Thanksgiving approaches, I’m reminded of the importance of giving back, fostering community, and celebrating the contributions of those around us.

With the election behind us, AAPOR’s task force is hard at work investigating the accuracy of the 2024 pre-election polling.  As we did in 2020 (report) and 2016 (report), AAPOR has assembled a committee of experts from academia, media, political polling firms, and major survey research organizations, each drawing on their unique backgrounds to review the performance of polling in the 2024 election. Led by Josh Pasek, the committee’s work is underway, and AAPOR expects their final report to be completed and available to the media and the public in mid-2025.

This year, the Development Subcommittee worked closely with Jay Nussel (a heartfelt thank you!) to explore ways AAPOR can navigate rising costs and ensure our work extends far beyond our annual conference. You’ll see a report from the Finance Committee in this newsletter, explaining why conference dues and membership payments alone won’t suffice to support our expanded mission.  And keep an eye out for another email from us on Giving Tuesday!

With our membership drive in full swing, I challenge you to:

Finally, I’m thrilled to see our committees ramping up efforts to recognize those who have made a difference in our community. It’s never too early to start conversations about recognizing those whose contributions may have been overlooked or who represent perspectives we need to highlight. Let’s ensure the people and work we honor reflect the diversity and values of AAPOR. If you need ideas see our award page.  A little-known fact to all of those that never served on these award committees, often there are just a handful of applications and choices are hard because of that. So don’t be shy. If you are unsure if a nomination is okay or don’t know what information to include to make a successful nomination, you can always reach out to us or the committee chairs.

Thank you for your dedication to our shared mission. Together, we’re building a stronger, more innovative community.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Warm regards,

Frauke Kreuter
