Chapter Spotlight: SAPOR

08/08/2016

The Southern Chapter of AAPOR (SAPOR) spans from Virginia down to Texas. While most of our members are located in Raleigh, NC, where the chapter began almost 40 years ago, the SAPOR board has been actively recruiting members from the rest of the states in our region while also working on adding member benefits and networking opportunities. SAPOR’s membership roster includes many states outside of our region as well.

We are excited to announce that our first regional chapter event during the 2016 AAPOR conference in Austin, TX, was attended by over 150 AAPORites! The positive feedback and attendance has encouraged us to throw another networking party next year in New Orleans (at an air conditioned venue this time!). SAPOR Treasurer, Ken Kluch, has been collecting sponsorship money and balancing our books so we can continue to offer low to no cost attendance fees!

SAPOR President Victoria Albright, with the help of the SAPOR Board and volunteers, is compiling the SAPOR Policies and Practices manual and repository for formal documents such as articles of incorporation, bylaws, tax-exempt charters, etc. Among the many initiatives board members and volunteers are debating behind the scenes is a new SAPOR logo. This redesign effort is also led by Victoria Albright. Vicky is having fun with different ideas and plans to hold a vote on a new look for SAPOR in the coming months.

Speaking of votes, the summer SAPOR newsletter will also include a call for nominations for board positions opening up. New board members will be voted on in October. Valrie Horton, SAPOR secretary, is preparing to send out our summer newsletter in the next few weeks. If you’re not yet on our mailing list you can find a copy on our website once it’s been released.

Mark your calendars! Angelique Uglow, Conference chair and Stacey Bell, Vice-conference chair, are busy organizing the 35th annual SAPOR conference in Raleigh, NC on October 6th & 7th, 2016. Abstract submission deadline has been EXTENDED to Monday August 15th, 2016. A competitive $250 will be awarded for the best student–authored research paper submitted to the conference from anywhere in the United States. This competition is held by the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science (http://www.odum.unc.edu/) at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in conjunction with the conference.
