Submitting a Panel for the 2019 AAPOR Conference – New Protocol

11/18/2022

In the last newsletter I mentioned that we were looking to tweak the process for submitting a panel for the annual conference. Here are the details.

Why are we tweaking the panel submission process?
There were two issues with the old approach that we are looking to solve. First, for the Denver conference we were able to accept just 65% of the panels submitted. None of the strong papers attached to an unsuccessful panel were eligible for consideration in the program on their own. Second, under the old protocol, panel organizers had to fill out all of the information about the various presenters in the panel. Understandably, sometimes the information submitted was not correct, which later frustrated presenters. The new protocol fixes both issues.

What is the new protocol?
Here are the steps for submitting a panel for the 2019 AAPOR Conference:

  1. A bit of planning. The panel organizer and participants should touch base before submission time and agree on the panel topic and contributions from each speaker.
  1. Each panel presenter submits an abstract as a paper. After the call for abstracts goes out, the individual panel presenters each need to submit an abstract for their presentation. Select “Paper” or “Methodological Brief” as the submission type. This will be used to determine a possible (not guaranteed) place on the program if the pre-arranged panel is not accepted. On completion of your abstract submission, you will need to provide your abstract ID to the panel organizer.
  1. The organizer submits an abstract for the entire panel. Once all the abstract IDs have been collected, the panel organizer needs to submit an abstract with “Panel” as the submission type. The organizer will be asked for a title, panel description, and the abstract ID numbers of your panelists. Note: organizers who themselves plan to present in the panel need to submit twice (first their personal paper and later the panel).

We hope that this new process will result in an even stronger conference program and more accurate information recorded for presenters. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at ckennedy@pewresearch.org.
