More on our regional AAPOR chapters

11/18/2022

Recently, I was able to participate in the annual conference of another of our seven AAPOR chapters. This time, it was the 42nd annual conference of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research (MAPOR). Held every year in Chicago the weekend before Thanksgiving since before I entered graduate school, MAPOR’s conference is another of AAPOR’s regional jewels. The meeting includes two full days of presentations, with four sessions running concurrently during each time slot. It also features a Short Course – Ana Villar from the City University of London presented this year; a Keynote Speaker – Google’s Mario Callegaro this year; and a unique Pedagogy Hour presentation, this year by former AAPOR President Mollyann Brodie. Student paper awards for best theoretical and best methods papers were also given out as part of a program maintained by a distinguished group of MAPOR Fellows.  This conference is another solid example of the energy, quality, and value contributed by our regional chapters. And like all of our chapters, MAPOR is expanding its outreach to host additional activities throughout the year beyond this keystone event. I mentioned previously that our chapters are the main source of AAPOR’s future leadership. Experience tells me they are also a proving ground for innovation and fresh ideas, in addition to providing an opportunity for those future leaders to gain valuable experience.
