Chapter Spotlight: SAPOR

11/18/2022

SAPOR has had an amazing start to 2019! After completing our Annual conference in October 2018, the newly elected officers assumed their roles in January and have met monthly, sometimes more, in order to plan new initiatives for SAPOR members.

The 2018 Annual Conference was a success! The conference was two days dedicated to the theme #SAPORSpeaks – Showcasing the Science, Legitimacy, and Diversity in Survey Research. The conference included six sessions with more than 20  paper presentations. Presenters were from organizations/universities including Abt Associates, Black Rock City Census, Duke University, Elon University, Nielsen, Reconnect Research, RTI International, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, University of Georgia, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of South Carolina, and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The key note address, Is “Data Science” Relevant? Solutioning in an Ever-Changing Data World, was given by Dr. Michael Link with Abt Associates. Following the keynote address Joe Murphy (RTI International) Dr. Jason Brinkley (Abt Associates), and Dr. Charles Lau (RTI International) captivated attendees with a panel on Innovative Technologies and Methodologies. Ida Hjermitslev, a student at Duke University, was our winner of the Student Competition, hosted by Odem Institute for Research in Social Science at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Her paper was titled “You are Either with Us or Against Us”: Coalition-Based Inferences About Opposition Parties.

The SAPOR board is well underway with plans for the 2019 Annual Conference to be held October 3-4, 2019 in Raleigh, NC. This year’s conference theme is #SAPORSpeaks: Increasing Response Rates in an Ever-Changing Research World. Please mark your calendar and make plans to join us!

In June, SAPOR kicked off the Summer Webinar Series with two in-person happy hour events in North Carolina and Texas! The summer series includes three webinars which are scheduled for July, August, and September focusing on presentations, key themes, and highlights from the 2019 AAPOR Conference in Toronto, Canada. We just finished the first webinar that repeated a condensed version of the Transparency and Privacy session at AAPOR. Next up, will be more highlights from the conference, scheduled for August 23. All are welcome to register. Webinars are recorded so that those who register will have access even if they are unable to make the live webinar.

Moving forward, the SAPOR board is working to create more opportunities for SAPOR members to connect outside of the Annual Conference. This year we are working to build our sense of community and closer connectedness. Thus, we are cooking up other opportunities to meet socially and professionally.
