Chapter Spotlight: SAPOR

11/18/2022

Hello AAPOR members! I am delighted to bring you greetings from the Southern Chapter of AAPOR (SAPOR). SAPOR includes 14 states spanning from Virginia all the way down to Texas. While many of our members are located in Raleigh/Durham, NC where the chapter began 40 years ago, the SAPOR board has been actively recruiting more members from the rest of the states in our region while also working on adding to our member benefits and networking opportunities. SAPOR’s membership roster includes many states outside of our region as well. If you would like to join SAPOR or learn more about upcoming SAPOR events, please visit our website!

I am excited to share more about our 37th annual SAPOR conference. The conference will be held in downtown Raleigh, NC, October 4-5, 2018. We invite researchers to submit papers ASAP as our extended deadline is quickly approaching.

The theme for this year’s conference is “SAPOR Speaks. Showcasing the Science, Legitimacy, and Diversity in Survey Research.” This year we are highlighting how SAPOR chapter members are dedicated to a variety of research interests offering society legitimate data grounded in best practices and scientifically rigorous methodologies. We look forward to showcasing the work of our SAPOR speakers and hearing more about how they blend fundamental research principles with new ideas that keep our industry forward thinking while representing a reliable and inclusive voice of the public.

We are also very happy to have Dr. Michael Link as our keynote speaker for this year’s conference. Dr. Link is Division Vice President for Data Science, Surveys & Enabling Technologies at Abt Associates. With more than 30 years of experience in the field of data collection, Dr. Link is a past President of both AAPOR (2014-2015) and SAPOR (2001-2002). His research efforts focus on developing methodologies for confronting the most pressing issues facing measurement and data science, including use of new technologies such as mobile platforms, social media, and other forms of Big Data for understanding public attitudes and behaviors. Along with several colleagues, he received the American Association for Public Opinion Research 2011 Mitofsky Innovator’s Award for his research on address-based sampling. His numerous research articles have appeared in leading scientific journals, such as Public Opinion Quarterly, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, and Journal of Official Statistics.

Make plans now to attend our conference this year. We hope to see y’all soon!
