Chapter Spotlight: NYAAPOR

11/18/2022

The New York chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (NYAAPOR) mission is to offer its members and the research community an opportunity to discuss and debate methodological, ethical, and substantive issues related to a broad range of research topics. We had a great kickoff event this past month, and we are looking forward to an exciting program over the next year.

Our opening event of the season featured Stanford Professor Jon Krosnick, and took place at the Birdland Jazz Club. This was a special event, as it was both a workshop and an opportunity for networking during a live jazz performance after the presentation.  Jon gave an engaging and informative presentation called the “Future of Survey Research”, and offered tremendous insight on the integrity and value of survey research and polling practices today.  The musical performance featured the Charged Particles, with Jon Krosnick himself on drums, and special guest Paul McCandless, a Grammy award-winning saxophonist.

NYAAPOR members can look forward to more exciting events in the near future. We are co-sponsoring an event on Oct 27th with PANJAAPOR titled: “Pollsters on Politics: A Conversation About the 2016 Race for President and the State of Public Opinion Research.”  Other future events include a post-election seminar in November and a student poster competition in December.

In addition to serving our membership through highly relevant programming, our goal is also to retain and expand NYAAPOR membership base.  We have created a PowerPoint presentation outlining the NYAAPOR benefits that we will share at NYAAPOR events and when visiting corporate sites.  We also plan to review our By-Laws with the intent of adding two new Council positions to make it easier for members to transition to the next year's Council.  Lastly, we are beefing up our efforts on social media sites including Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Feel free to join us there!
