Chapter Spotlight: MAPOR

11/18/2022

MAPOR recently convened its 43rd annual conference, our largest ever at 240 attendees!! The conference featured a keynote speech by Jennifer Agiesta, Director of Polling and Election Analytics at CNN. We also had a pedagogy hour presented by Colm O’Muircheartaigh of the Harris School of Public Policy Research and NORC, as well as a short course by Stephanie Eckman of RTI.  The conference also featured three different panels, a working group, and submissions from 46 different institutions. We were very pleased to introduce John Loft of RTI as our newest MAPOR fellow this year, in addition to new student-focused activities.

In 2018, MAPOR also hosted two well-attended webinars by Michael Schober and Masahiko Aida. In 2019, we are planning to host more informative webinars to continue to provide educational opportunities to our members. In order to support MAPOR’s mission of bringing our members together to learn about each other’s work and to network, we also plan to hold mixers in cities other than our annual conference location (Chicago). Accordingly, our next mixer will be held in February at Ann Arbor, Michigan. Stay tuned for the details of the mixer which will be announced in January!!

MAPOR made significant progress from an organizational standpoint. We achieved financial stability through support from our generous sponsors, the conference short course, and conference attendance. The MAPOR Executive Council is exploring ideas about how to best to utilize MAPORs funds in 2019 and have surveyed the members for their ideas. Initial returns from our member survey indicate that MAPOR members strongly value opening up more sponsorship opportunities and/or further subsidized rates for students, and we continue to examine how we can be even more inclusive to students.

In the upcoming year, MAPOR is committed to further diversify its membership and Executive Council. We will continue reaching out to organizations, departments, and scholars who may not be aware of MAPOR or have not been a part of MAPOR for a while. We aim to continue providing more value for our members through examining ways to improve our systems and organizational functioning, and work to provide additional service through new learning and networking opportunities for our members.
