Chapter Spotlight: DCAAPOR

11/18/2022

DCAAPOR is fortunate to have a large and active membership. We currently stand at 427 members. Having such a large and diverse membership allows us to host a number of events throughout the year.

We have had a busy 2018 so far! In March, we hosted the Public Opinion Quarterly Special Issue Conference, which featured the guest editor and many of the authors who contributed to the 2017 Special Issue: Survey Research, Today and Tomorrow.” In conjunction with the Journal of Official Statistics/Statistics Sweden, we hosted the Workshop on Responsive and Adaptive Survey Design. The workshop was based on the Journal of Official Statistics Special Issue on Responsive and Adaptive Design, published in September 2017. Finally, we hosted the Meet the National AAPOR Council Happy Hour.

Our annual Summer Preview/Review Conference is fast approaching. DCAAPOR co-hosts this event each year with the Washington Statistical Society. This conference provides a sample of exemplary presentations taking place at this year’s national and international conferences. It’s a great chance for those who cannot travel outside of the DC area to hear about the latest innovations in the field. The conference will take place July 16th.
This fall we plan to host a mentoring event for students and early career professionals. We will also be hosting our biannual Election Polling Post Mortem event in conjunction with the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. More information for these events can be found on the DC AAPOR website (www.dc-aapor.org).
Finally, we’d like to acknowledge the passing of our dear friend and colleague Scott Fricker. Scott served as the DCAAPOR president from 2017-2018. As our president, he worked to improve the diversity of DC-AAPOR membership. One of his initiatives was the formation of a diversity workgroup. This workgroup is pursuing ways that DCAAPOR can reach out to early career professionals and disseminate information about our field. Scott was key in helping to plan many events aimed at expanding knowledge sharing and collaboration within the DCAAPOR community. For his service in the public sector and the greater survey methodology community, Scott was awarded the inaugural Public Service Award at the annual AAPOR conference.

Requests continue for what people can do to help Scott’s family. A GoFundMe account has been created to support the educational needs of Scott’s children: www.gofundme.com/fricker-educational-fund. To date over $10,000 has been raised. If you would like to help, consider making a donation.
