Chapter Spotlight: DC-AAPOR

11/18/2022

2019 has been a busy year so far for the Washington-Baltimore Chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research – better known as DC-AAPOR. In March, DC-AAPOR hosted their annual Public Opinion Quarterly Special Issue Conference: “The Psychology of Politics and Elections”. The event featured presentations from the authors in the POQ special issue including: Richard R. Lau (Rutgers University), Lilliana Mason (University of Maryland), Marzia Oceno (University of Michigan), Markus Prior (Princeton University), Kathleen Searles (Louisiana State University) and Patrick D. Tucker (Yale University). Scott Keeter and Jocelyn Kiley of the Pew Research Center were the discussants. DC-AAPOR also hosted a happy hour event: “Meet the National AAPOR Executive Council” in downtown Washington, DC. Then in April, DC-AAPOR and the Washington Statistical Society (WSS) co-sponsored the seminar: “Role of Statistics in Today’s Changing Society: 2020 Census”. The speakers were Julia Coombs and Marisa T. Hotchkiss from the U.S. Census Bureau and the seminar was chaired by Martha McRoy of the Pew Research Center.

After the 74th Annual AAPOR Conference, DC-AAPOR co-sponsored a seminar with WSS titled: “Diving into the U.S. Census Bureau Planning Database and ROAM Application: Tools for Survey and Census Planning” in early June. The seminar featured Suzanne McArdle and Kathleen Kephart of the U.S. Census Bureau with Tom Mule serving as the Chair. On June 25, DC-AAPOR will host the seminar: “Introduction to Using Online Testing to Support Pre-Testing and Survey Methods Research in the Federal Government” before teaming again with WSS for our largest annual event: the DC-AAPOR/WSS 2019 Summer Review/Preview Conference. At the summer conference, a selection of exemplary presentations and posters from major national and international conferences will be featured. Later this year, DC-AAPOR will again host a student paper competition as well as hold its annual holiday party.

DC-AAPOR has also formed a Diversity Committee to recognize and address the varying interests of the local community and to better serve a broader practicing and research membership. Last fall DC-AAPOR hosted a Diversity and Career Panel Discussion event to discuss careers in survey methodology with the focus on serving and recruiting student members. This year the committee is developing a member survey to help identify the issues, needs and desires of our membership in order to build a stronger, more diverse organization.
