Chapter Spotlight: DC-AAPOR

11/18/2022

The Washington-Baltimore Chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (DC-AAPOR) has grown to 443 members and is having a busy year.

Spring events included a weighting course (co-sponsored with AAPOR) taught by David Haziza, and a Meet-the-National Council Happy Hour (https://dc-aapor.org/events/past-events/).  Seventy people participated in the 2-day weighting course; registrants who were not AAPOR or DC-AAPOR members received membership in both organizations as part of their registration fees.  Over 45 DC-AAPOR members came out to Zatyina in downtown DC to meet and mingle with AAPOR board members before their spring business meeting.

DC-AAPOR has several initiatives in the works for this summer as well.  Program Chair Paul Scanlon is busy organizing the Sixth Annual Conference Preview/Review co-sponsored by the Washington Statistical Society. The conference will bring together a sample of exemplary presentations taking place at this year’s national and international conferences—ranging from AAPOR and JSM to WAPOR and ERSA. The Conference will be held on July 24, and registration opens June 17 – if you’re in DC, check it out!  Additionally, AAPOR and DC-AAPOR are co-hosting another short course on July 10: this 1-day cognitive interview seminar taught by Gordon Willis will focus on the analysis of cognitive interviewing data and recent advances in question-evaluation methodologies.  DC-AAPOR has an exciting program of events lined up for the remainder of the year, as well – including a 1-day seminar on data visualization, a short course on usability testing, an event for members of the DC-AAPOR community to meet the new Chief Statistician of the United States, Nancy Potock, and more.

The DC-AAPOR Diversity Subcommittee, led by Anna Brown (Associate Treasurer) and Chuck Shuttles (At-Large), recently kicked off efforts to evaluate ways to improve chapter outreach, grow membership, and ensure that our events and activities represent the needs of the diverse communities that we serve.
Jessica Holzberg has been working on updating and improving the DC-AAPOR website, which now features a mobile responsive design, streamlined membership sign-up, and a board for job postings. Check us out at https://dc-aapor.org/.
