Bylaws! Code! Journals! Energy!

11/18/2022

Last year was my first back on Council in a while, so I could see with fresh eyes how much things have changed behind the scenes at AAPOR in the intervening years. I spent the year amazed at the sheer volume of work that these 15 volunteers – and the subcommittees and many other volunteers and staff – accomplishes for AAPOR members. The generosity, inspiration, and energy in AAPOR are remarkable and contagious. There is a lot to do this year, so I am counting on catching as much energy as possible from those around me!

Some tasks come to Council on a regular cycle, and this year, there are two big ones: Reviews of bylaws and of the AAPOR code. These are foundational documents for AAPOR, and we review and update them every five years. The last update of the bylaws involved a substantial “redesign,” so we are not expecting many big changes in the bylaws themselves – though perhaps we should expect surprises. The growth of AAPOR’s membership and activities means that the Policies and Procedures that the organization needs for its daily life need to be streamlined and accessible, so the Bylaws Review Committee will also attend to matters of governance. Our goal is to make organizational matters more efficient and consistent for future Councils. The Bylaws Review Committee is still being formed, but I will serve as one of the chairs with help from Councilor-at-Large Mary Losch and others. The review of AAPOR’s code offers an opportunity to consider how the principles already in the code should be extended to new and varied research technologies and contexts. Stephanie Eckman, outgoing Standards Chair, will lead that effort. The updated bylaws and code will be brought to members for a vote next year

This year, two of AAPOR’s journals will search for new editors: The Advisory Committee for Public Opinion Quarterly will begin its search during this Council year. To prepare, the Ad Hoc Committee on the Future of AAPOR’s Journals, which began work in January 2019 under Mollyann Brodie, has undertaken a substantial review of ways that AAPOR might support its journals and face other challenges as the environment for journal publication changes rapidly. Survey Practice, AAPOR’s newest publication, will also be searching for a new editor.

With the election and census in 2020 seeming closer every day, Communications Chair Josh de la Rosa, Vice-President Dan Merkle, and Councilor-at-Large Evans Witt have joined forces to coordinate some key activities. These include developing messages in response to current issues concerning polls and getting the task force to evaluate the pre-election polls in place well in advance.

In their June planning meeting last week, Councilors developed exciting plans for Conference, Education, Membership and Chapter Relations, and Standards that we will report on over the year. We are also all aware that our 75th anniversary is coming up, and we are looking forward to proposals from the committee planning those activities.

Please be in touch with ideas you would like us to consider – we are your Council. In addition, if any of you has been mulling over a favorite bylaw for the last half decade, I definitely want to hear about it!
