Back to school …

11/18/2022

Summer wasn’t endless after all, and by mid-September Council was meeting in Chicago. AAPOR’s journals – one of AAPOR’s two key scientific efforts – were among the items on our agenda. Both David Dutwin and Tim Johnson reminded us, in different ways, in their presidential addresses about the importance of the science behind surveys and public opinion research. Since its beginnings 75 years ago, AAPOR has played a critical role in the development of that science. Two of AAPOR’s central activities are the annual conference and the journals. The conference and journals are venues where we receive feedback on our work and share what we have learned. These activities — peer review and dissemination — are both critical to keeping any science vital.

Keeping AAPOR’s scientific venues strong benefits all practitioners and researchers in the field, whatever the focus of their work. As we all know, science is a set of methods for learning about the world and deciding that, at least until we get better methods or better data, “this” is what we think we know. Science is not something one “believes” in. Science is a practice. And, of course, we hope that practice makes perfect!

The annual conference and the journals are also the principal sources of AAPOR’s revenue. This year, two of AAPOR’s journals – Public Opinion Quarterly and Survey Practice – are recruiting new editorial teams. The editors will be leading these journals at a critical time: Journals compete for articles that increase their “impact factor.” Peer reviewers and editors have large numbers of manuscripts to review and decide about. Significant changes in the business model under which scholarly journals have been published are fast approaching. And editors rely on a vision of what will be important in the field in the future to guide close decisions. Please encourage editors-to-be to consult the announcements on AAPOR’s website.

The second day of our September meeting was devoted to reviewing the budget and planning for the next year. AAPOR’s Finance Chair, Lydia Saad, provided a brief overview of AAPOR’s finances. In the coming year, AAPOR will continue to invest in initiatives that are intended to grow our size and influence, and directly contribute to achieving the AAPOR 2025 plan. AAPOR has a considerable reserve, and we remain in a very stable financial position.

The call for nominations for AAPOR awards will be out soon. Please review the list of awards and consider making a nomination. We rely on hearing from members to ensure that our awards represent the contributions and diversity of all of AAPOR.

And finally, thanks to NORC in Chicago for hosting the fall Executive Council meeting – complete with a view of the lake.

Please be in touch with concerns you have and ideas you’d like Council to consider – we are your Council!
