AAPOR 73rd Annual Conference Update

11/18/2022

Greetings AAPOR. Here in New England, the season is changing and fall colors are starting to appear everywhere. As I reflect on the time of year (fall is by far my most favorite season) it reminds me that change can be welcomed and good. And so it is with our annual conference. For AAPOR 2018 we’ve made a few changes too that I hope will be as welcome as the crisp fall breezes and bright radiant colors that remind us that it isn’t summer anymore. One of the most notable changes is that the conference will take place between WEDNESDAY through SATURDAY. Some of the substantive changes I’m most excited about include:

  1.  A re-envisioning of the Research Hack. New this year: AAPOR’s Got Talent! Taking inspiration from reality T.V. talent shows, we believe AAPOR members have the talent to tackle some of the toughest issues in survey research. Teams (or individuals) will submit pitches for how to address an important survey research problem identified by the AAPOR community. Five teams will be selected to present their pitches to a panel of judges in an open session at the 2018 conference. The judges and audience will then vote to decide which team has the biggest talent. The winning team will receive $10,000 to carry out the research! The call to participate will be coming out soon from the AAPOR’s Got Talent Organizing Committee! Stay Tuned!
  2. For AAPOR 2018 we will have a mini-conference that will be spliced into the regular AAPOR conference schedule by means of a specially designated track called PORTAL (Public Opinion Research Training and Learning). These 90 minute sessions will showcase two speakers giving 45-minute introductory talks and are intended to be a tangible way to help AAPOR attendees retool in new and emerging areas of our field at a critical time of transition and to help researchers, students and practitioners alike take their own survey and public opinion research in new directions and to new heights.
  3. Submissions for the conference will again be organized by tracks but we are asking all submitters to select a single primary track. We will be making decisions about accepting abstracts separately by track in an effort to maximize the diversity and quality of papers included in the final program.
  4. We are also working on finalizing the details of a Demonstration Session that will give AAPOR members who have a software solution to a survey research problem an opportunity to showcase their solution in a digital poster type demo session. We are so excited about this chance to facilitate a conversation between those who are seeking software support and those who are creating it! Stay tuned for more details on how to participate coming soon!
  5. Similar to last year we are also going to have a conference kick-off session, but it will take place later in the afternoon on Wednesday just before the All Chapter Reception which will also feature a chef tasting like last year! Many of you reported on the membership survey that you liked this set up so we are keeping for this year. But my hope in moving the Keynote to just before the mixer is that it will give you a lot of food for thought while you are standing in line to get your food or libations J We are securing two keynote speakers and I can’t wait to tell you more about this in an upcoming newsletter!

In closing, I want to encourage you to join the conversation of survey and public opinion researchers who are “Taking Survey and Public Opinion Research to New Heights!“ Submit an abstract for AAPOR 2018 by November 9, 2017, 11:59 p.m. EST!
