AAPOR 72nd Annual Conference Update

11/18/2022

In her 2016 Presidential Address, Mollyann Brodie challenged AAPOR to move beyond best intentions to take actions that make our organization the “Big Tent” we want it to be: a place that embraces both the evolving nature of the profession as well as the diversity of perspectives and personal characteristics of our existing and potential members, and multicultural country at large. Doing so, she argued, is not just the right thing to do but vital to our continuing relevance and growth.

It was a heartfelt, stirring message, and as I contemplated themes for our upcoming New Orleans conference it is one that many of you told me you wanted to build upon. Thus our 2017 theme “Embracing Change and Diversity in Public Opinion and Social Science Research” is inspired by and aims to sustain the momentum generated by Mollyann’s remarks.

This theme signals AAPOR's understanding and willingness to welcome both the challenges as well as opportunities presented by a rapidly changing public opinion and research methodology landscape. It also highlights our commitment to achieving greater diversity of members and leadership, with “diversity” broadly defined as encompassing professional and organizational affiliation, our myriad areas of focus, to more commonly considered demographics and personal characteristics.

Given such a theme, we are encouraging presentations that highlight new voices, perspectives, and approaches to join AAPOR’s familiar voices, topics, and cherished traditions. We anticipate a lively track of papers and polling post mortem spawned by the already extraordinary 2016 Election.

Of course the setting for this Big Tent raising is the fabulously diverse “Big Easy.” We are excited for the opportunity to infuse AAPOR into NOLA and NOLA into AAPOR. As many of you recall, the Sheraton New Orleans is the same hotel at which we held our 2008 conference, located on one of the most celebrated parade routes in the world. From the French Quarter and Bourbon Street to the Riverwalk and Warehouse District, you’ll be fewer than two blocks from everything you want to see! Taking advantage of our great location, we are investigating a number of fun NOLA-based activities.

I hope you will be able to join us in New Orleans and look forward to sending further updates as our plans firm up.

Abstracts for panels and individual papers opens on September 6, 2016 and closes on November 7, 2016. We look forward to your submissions!
