2018-2019 Executive Council Election

11/18/2022

On February 14, the newest slate of candidates for AAPOR’s Executive Council will be announced to the membership. Voting will begin in early March. To arrive at this point takes a lot of input, effort, and good judgement by our members, the Nominations Committee, and AAPOR Council.

Ever wonder how the nominees are selected? Here is how it works.

The first step is to form a Nominations Committee. This committee carries out the nominations search process, casting as wide a net as possible for potential nominees.

The current Past President chairs the committee; this year, that was me.  I selected a slate of recommended committee members (based on conversations with other members of Council) and this slate was approved by the Executive Council.  The goal was to have a diverse set of individuals on the Committee, including those from various sectors of the membership as well as a representative mix based on gender, age, race, geography, and stage in career.  This year’s Nominations Committee included Stephen Blumberg, Sarah Cho, Sunshine Hillygus, Ricki Jarmon, Courtney Kennedy, Kristen Olson, and me.

The next step is to solicit nominees. A call for nominees (and several reminders) went out to the membership with a description of the open positions and a request for nominations.  No screening done at this stage—the goal is to develop as deep and wide a pool for each position for the committee to consider. To be honest, relatively few nominations come in through the official request for nominations process.  Towards the end of this period (which typically lasts about a month), the committee reached out to encourage additional potential nominees for roles where nominations from members were few in number. Vice President and Associate Conference Chair are the two roles which historically have had fewer nominees than desired; of course, these are the hardest jobs on Council!  Ultimately, there were some 60 names for the Nominations Committee to consider for the eight open offices.

Next, the Committee reviewed the potential candidates for each position. Information such as volunteer service on AAPOR committees or task forces, past service on AAPOR Council, activity in the field, and other potentially relevant factors were considered.  In addition, the Committee looked for a diversity of perspectives among the potential candidates.  Those who are viewed as qualified for the role for which they are nominated were then contacted by a committee member to ensure that, if selected by Council, they would indeed be willing to run for that office.

Once the committee has a list of confirmed potential candidates, the list was rank ordered in terms of the committee’s views on each candidate’s fitness for office. The goal of this phase is to identify four or more potential candidates for each office—any of whom would make great leaders in the roles within which they have been nominated. This rank-ordered list was then sent to the AAPOR Council.

Every year, AAPOR Council has an in-person meeting in January and a key item for that meeting is selecting the final slate of nominees for the members to consider.  Each office is discussed in turn, in an effort to determine the two nominees who would make the best Councilors if elected. Although Council receives a rank ordering from the Nominations Committee, those recommendations are not always followed.  At this stage, Council also tries very hard to ensure that the slate a whole, and any resulting Executive Council, is representative of the broader membership in terms of sector, gender, age, race, and geography.  Once the top two candidates are identified by Council and Council believes it has a slate of candidates in which anyone would make an excellent leader for the association, Council votes on the final slate.

Now it’s up to you—the members—to vote and determine who will have the pleasure of serving our organization on the next Council. So please, remember to vote this year when the ballots are made available on March 8!

Please join me in thanking the members of the Nominations Committee for their hard work, and of course, all the candidates who are willing to spend their time and energy serving our community.

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE STARTING MARCH 8TH!
