AAPOR Releases New Report from Task Force on Responsible AI Integration in Survey Research

05/08/2026

AAPOR is pleased to announce the release of Responsible AI Integration in Survey Research, a new report from the Task Force on Responsible AI Integration in Survey Research. This work reflects AAPOR’s ongoing commitment to supporting innovation while upholding the standards of rigor, transparency, and trust that define high-quality survey research.

The task force was created in response to the rapid emergence of generative AI and large language models across the survey research lifecycle. As AI tools are increasingly being used in questionnaire design, interviewing, data processing, analysis, and reporting, the task force was charged with helping the profession navigate both the opportunities and the risks of these technologies.

The resulting report offers a practical framework for understanding how AI is already being used in survey research and what researchers, organizations, and data users should consider as adoption accelerates. The report explores issues of data quality, transparency, human oversight, ethics, and disclosure, while also outlining recommendations for responsible implementation and evaluation.

Readers will gain insight into how AI is being used across the survey lifecycle, from questionnaire design to interviewing, coding, analysis, and reporting. The report examines key risks and opportunities associated with AI-enabled survey research and introduces a framework for evaluating AI use through the lens of validity, reliability, sensitivity, and performance. It also outlines recommended transparency and disclosure standards for AI-assisted survey research and highlights ethical and human-subject considerations researchers should address as AI adoption grows.

Throughout the past year, AAPOR leadership has emphasized that the profession is at a pivotal moment—one that requires researchers to thoughtfully balance innovation with accountability and methodological integrity. This report is only the beginning of AAPOR’s work on AI in survey research.

As AI technologies continue to evolve, so too will the methodological, ethical, and transparency questions facing the field. To support this ongoing work, AAPOR has established a new AI Subcommittee that will continue expanding guidance, fostering collaboration, and helping the profession navigate the responsible integration of AI into survey research.

Thank you to the members of the AAPOR Task Force on Responsible AI Integration in Survey Research for their work on this significant initiative: David M. Rothschild (Co-Chair), Jenny Marlar (Co-Chair), Ashley Amaya, Soubhik Barari, Trent Buskirk, Curtiss Cobb, Jen Gennai, Sunshine Hillygus, Ramya Korlakai Vinayak, Masha Krupenkin, Sunghee Lee, Darby Steiger, and Brock Webb.
