President’s Letter – Looking Ahead: New Standards Resources, Membership Drive, An LA Love Story…

10/15/2025

Dear AAPOR Members,

As we settle into fall, I’m feeling tremendous optimism about where AAPOR is headed and gratitude for the energy and engagement of this community. We’ve reached several exciting milestones recently—none more significant than welcoming Betty Whitaker as AAPOR’s new Executive Director. Betty officially joined us in September, bringing more than three decades of association leadership experience, and she’s already hit the ground running. Her strategic insight and deep commitment to member engagement will help AAPOR continue to grow stronger and more connected. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Betty as she begins this new chapter with us.

This season also marks the start of AAPOR’s membership drive, a perfect time to renew your own membership and encourage colleagues, students, and collaborators to join our community. Membership is at the heart of everything we do—from advancing high standards in research to fostering innovation and mentorship across our field. Every member strengthens our collective voice and helps maintain AAPOR’s role as the leading home for public opinion and survey research professionals.

To highlight the critical value AAPOR provides members, this issue of the newsletter shines a spotlight on the invaluable work of our Standards Committee. Over the past year, dedicated volunteers have developed several important new resources for our field, including guidance on Ethical Issues in Linking Non-Survey Data to Survey Data, Texting for Research, Estimating “e”, and a new Online Response Rate Calculator. These documents represent countless hours of thoughtful collaboration and expertise, and they will help researchers across disciplines uphold the rigorous ethical and methodological standards that define AAPOR. I want to extend my deepest thanks to the volunteers who led and contributed to these efforts—their commitment to excellence and service to our profession is truly inspiring. I know that these resources will help support the work we do.

Looking ahead to AAPOR’s 81st Annual Conference, “An LA Love Story of Data, Innovation, and the Quest for Truth,” the Call for Papers is now open. The program promises to be both bold and thoughtful, with deep-dive sessions and new opportunities to explore how our field can rebuild trust, embrace innovation, and communicate the value of what we do. I can’t wait to see the ideas and collaborations that emerge.

And I cannot close this letter without acknowledging the continued challenges we face in our field—from pressures on the federal statistical system to increasing demands on researchers who strive to maintain accuracy, transparency, and public trust amid rapid change. These challenges remind us why AAPOR’s mission matters so deeply. By supporting one another, advancing best practices, and advocating for the essential role of credible data and research, we help ensure that our work—and our values—continue to make an impact. AAPOR continues to strive to be a place where, together, we can find ways to successfully manage these challenging times and to give voice to our profession.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and engagement. The strength of AAPOR lies in its members; your expertise, curiosity, and generosity are what keep our organization thriving. I’m so proud to be part of this community and excited for all we’ll accomplish together in the months ahead.

Warm regards,

Jordon Peugh

AAPOR President, 2025-2026
