With Gratitude—Reflections After the Conference …

Dear AAPOR Colleagues,

First and foremost, I want to thank you. It was a joy to witness the energy, thoughtfulness, and community spirit that defined this year’s conference. I’m deeply sorry I didn’t have the chance to speak with many of you in person—and that I wasn’t able to run the business meeting as planned.

While I couldn’t be there in full, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the AAPOR staff. They’ve done a phenomenal job throughout the year—supporting a rich calendar of webinars, launching new initiatives like SurvAI Day (in collaboration with ASA, WSS, UMD, and others), staying true to our mission and vision, growing our social media presence, rolling out a matchmaking opportunity for members, and—when circumstances called for it—reimagining a leaner, sustainable conference model.

And what a conference it was:

We welcomed over 1,000 attendees, far beyond what we thought possible when we committed to holding the meeting in person.

More than one-third were first-time attendees, many from communities new to AAPOR, who brought fresh perspectives and enthusiasm.

We saw a great deal of thoughtful innovation—in methods, applications, and interdisciplinary work.

Though we missed the presence of many of our government colleagues and contractors, we’re already working with DC-AAPOR and WSS to host in-person events in the D.C. area. Please keep an eye out for updates from Morgan.

For those working at the intersection of surveys and AI, I encourage you to consider submitting to the NLPOR workshop in Canada—the deadline is June 23.

And finally, I am thrilled to hand the gavel to Jordon, who has already stepped into the role with energy and purpose. AAPOR is in excellent hands.

Thank you for being part of this community. Your contributions, curiosity, and care continue to define and strengthen our field.

Warmly,

Frauke Kreuter
2024-2025 President

… With Optimism – Preparing for the Next Year

Dear Fellow AAPOR Members,

It is an honor to write to you as I begin my term as President of AAPOR. Having served as Vice President this past year, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the strength, resilience, and heart of this remarkable community. I couldn’t be more grateful or more inspired.

Reflecting on Recent & Current Challenges

The past year, and in particular the past several months, we have seen considerable challenges and change. We have also witnessed our community’s perseverance and strength. In this time, AAPOR members stepped up—both for one another and for the profession. Thanks to the leadership of Past President Frauke Kreuter, Executive Director Tristanne Staudt, our dedicated Council, and the tireless AAPOR staff, we delivered meaningful professional development, rich educational opportunities, and innovative ways to connect as a community.

This year’s Annual Conference was a true highlight. Under the outstanding leadership of Conference Chair Gina Walejko and Associate Chair Morgan Earp, we innovated and adapted. We were anxious about attendance, but in the end, we not only met our downsized attendance goals—we exceeded them by a factor of two. The conference was dynamic, energizing, and a powerful reminder of what makes AAPOR so special.

We also felt the absence of those who couldn’t join us this year. To those we missed: we’re thinking of you and look forward to welcoming you back at the 2026 conference in Los Angeles.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Our Foundation

Our focus for this year is on strengthening AAPOR’s foundation, ensuring that we’re well-positioned to serve our members and the profession for years to come. Here’s a look at what’s ahead:

Bylaw and Code Review – As part of our regular five-year review, the Standards Committee and our Councilor-at-Large will lead an evaluation of our Bylaws and Code of Professional Ethics and Practices. With new methodologies and technologies like AI emerging, we need to ensure our standards remain strong and relevant. We’ll be looking to members for input as this process unfolds.

Governance Review – A decade has passed since our last governance review. It’s time to reflect on our structure, ensuring that our operations continue to align with our mission and values. Once again, your insights will help guide the way.

Financial Planning – Like many organizations, we’ve relied on past surpluses to weather recent uncertainty. Now, it’s time to rebalance and refocus—assessing spending, revenue streams, development strategies, and new opportunities to ensure long-term financial sustainability.

Executive Director Search – With deep gratitude, we say farewell to Tristanne Staudt, whose leadership over the past three and a half years has been instrumental in our transition to self-management. A search committee is already at work, and we’re optimistic about identifying our next Executive Director by this fall.

While this work focuses on cultivating sustainability for our organization, it will happen alongside continued investment in AAPOR’s other core strategic goals: to educate and support our members, advance best practices, foster an engaged community, and grow our voice.

A Call to Engage

This is a pivotal year for AAPOR. There’s much to be done—and we have elected a Council that is ready and energized for the challenge. I’m grateful to be working alongside the incoming Vice President, Mary Losch, and the entire Council: a deeply committed and competent group dedicated to thoughtful leadership and the well-being of our organization.

I love AAPOR. I respect its history. And I am truly optimistic about our perennial ability to tackle challenges like the ones before us.

I invite you to join me in sharing that optimism and spreading positivity and confidence in the strength of our organization. Let’s roll up our sleeves, stay engaged, and continue building a strong, inclusive, and vibrant AAPOR for us all and for the next generation of public opinion researchers.

Warmly,

Jordon Peugh
AAPOR President, 2025–2026
