New International Online Course for Journalists

AAPOR, ESOMAR and WAPOR have collaborated to launch the first-ever international online training tool for journalists to help improve media reporting about polls and survey results around the world.
 
Aimed at journalists, media students, bloggers, voters and anyone who wants to know why polls work and how they are conducted, the course is hosted by Poynter, which provides online training for journalists. Thanks to AAPOR, ESOMAR and WAPOR funding, the course is available free of charge.

AAPOR responds to Federal proposal to change the Common Rule

On September 8, 2015, a Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) was published in the Federal Register regarding proposed changes to the Common Rule governing human subjects’ research. As these proposed changes are far-reaching and, if adopted, will affect many AAPOR members, especially those that submit their research to IRB’s for review, at its September meeting AAPOR’s Executive Council approved the creation of an Ad Hoc Committee to respond to the proposed changes and develop answers to the 88 questions in the NPRM.

USDOL’s O*NET program is updating the classification of Survey Researchers

AAPOR has been asked to assist with the current update of Survey Researchers for a project of the U.S. Department of Labor called O*NET or the Occupational Information Network. Some of our most experienced members will be invited by O*NET liaisons at RTI International to complete a series of questionnaires that gather information on how the work is performed, the knowledge required and the typical work settings.

Tom Smith, Director of the General Social Survey, Honored with Inaugural Norman Bradburn Career Achievement Award

Tom W. Smith is the first recipient of NORC at the University of Chicago’s newly created Norman Bradburn Career Achievement Award. The award was established to recognize individuals who, through the course of working for NORC, have made a significant contribution to the field of social science research or methodology. For the past 35 years, Smith has been the director of the General Social Survey, one of NORC's most visible projects and one of the nation's most heavily utilized datasets. Smith also directs NORC's Center for the Study of Politics and Society.

Transparency Initiative Admits 77 Charter Members during its First Year

The TI wrapped up its first official year of operation in early October 2015, having completed processing and admission of 77 survey organizations as Charter Members. This exceeded our expectations and we are very pleased with the strong commitment to the principle of transparency of research methodology that many of the leading organizations in our Association have taken by formally affiliating with this effort. The complete list of Charter Members can be found on AAPOR’s web site. These organizations represent 26 states, as well as the District of Columbia. One organization from Mexico has also joined the TI as a Charter Member. The TI Coordinating Committee continues to develop new online materials to support the Transparency Initiative, and we look forward to welcoming new members during our second year of operation.

Task Force on Reassessing Today’s Survey Methods Conducts Successful Mini-Conference; Working on Special Edition of POQ

AAPOR is lending a hand as our field works to adapt to changing social habits and new technologies. One prominent effort is the Task Force on Reassessing Today's Survey Methods. Launched in August 2014, this task force was asked to provide guidance to the association, and the profession more broadly, on how our methods should evolve to meet the challenges and take advantages of the opportunities coming our way.
